You're not wrong. Very simple electronics in a hardened box (cheap to produce). The whole bike only costs £3k!!

This is a very bad idea. When you use the brakes, kinetic energy is converted into heat. Far better to have three discs dissipate the heat rather than the smallest of the three. Glad you got it sorted. The problem could just have been duff or corroded connections. Pulling, cleaning with switch cleaner and reconnecting every connector on the loom and giving them all a scoosh of ACF-50 might have done the trick on the old loom.
