Anyone using the City Grip 150/70-13 rear on their Forza

Post by Chris S »

Your input would be greatly appreciated. Anything that might help, like cornering, Speedo/Odometer changes, and handling. Looks like this is my only option for a replacement around here.

Thanks.

I have the City Grip 150/70/13 on my Forza, makes a world of difference in how the bike feels but I would strongly recommend you replace the front tire too. You are going to feel more connected to the road and you won't believe the difference in handling .

Thank you flyangle. Couple of questions pls. Did you replace the front tire with a larger city grip too: to offset the rear? When you say difference in handling do you mean cornering or rough roads or something like that? Sorry to be a pain. thanks again bud.

It would be nice to have the specs on actual tire dimensions in order to find the closest tire diameter to the original tire - so as to limit the change to & feel of the scooter's CVT operation.
Regarding the City Grips......I have 7000 miles on a set on my other scooter. I love them, and will buy again.
DO install them as a pair! For a lot or reasons....
The price is certainly conducive to buying both tires for your Forza.
The ride is softer on the Michelins than the stock nylon Kenda tires, much better grip in the wet and in cornering. Very good wet grip stopping. I removed those stock Kendas two weeks after purchasing the scooter, new.
I decided not to skimp on what connects me and the scoot to the road!

Hey fish. Okie Scoot posted this web site in a tire topic here that might answer your comparison questions. (I plugged in the two tire sizes) http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tireca ... -150-70r13

I will study which MICHELIN City Grip comes closest to my needs when time to replace the Dunlops. It is very hard to find much information about these Dunlops. A couple of British and Italian sites have a few words about them. HONDA had to do some real snooping to find these for our scooters. Or Dunlop made them a heck of a deal on them. I guess they are supposed to be pretty good tires - but, dadgum, why the bleedin' rare size!!??
My Forza REAR Stock Dunlop Tire is : 140/70-13, 20.27" Diameter, 5.51" wide. And 65MPH is showing on your dash. With 3 plies sidewall and 3 plies tread, all nylon. 61 load rating, "P" speed (93MPH), 567lbs @ 33 PSI.

The 150/70-13 City Grip is not a "reinforced" rear tire, and has a "S" (112MPH) speed rating.21.27" Diameter, 5.91" wide. 66.73 MPH is your actual speed when 65 is showing on your dash.

The 130/70-13 rear City Grip is "reinforced" and carries a "P" speed rating. 20.17" Diameter, 5.12" wide. 63.27MPH is your actual speed.

The 140/60-13 City Grip is "reinforced" with a "P" speed rating. 19.61" Diameter, 5.51" wide. 61.54MPH is your actual speed.

I think this is where my stock Dunlop tires were made:
P.T. SUMI RUBBER INDONESIA
CIKAMPEK, JAWA BARAT
INDONESIA
in the 9th week of 2013 (my scoot's birthdate is July, 2013 - made in Thailand)

Sorry page didn't load for you, so I cut and pasted this from it. Hope it helps. Basically it comes down to about -2.6% change to speedo and as mine is +6% over this will actually make it more accurate. It looks like I don't really have much choice as I am down to wear bar and the Honda/Dunlop tire is listed as being on back order. Also there are no other 140/70-13 even listed in Canada.

140/70-13 150/70-13 Difference

Diameter inches (mm)
20.72 (526.2) 21.27 (540.2) 0.55 (14) 2.7%

Width inches (mm)
5.51 (140) 5.91 (150) 0.39 (10) 7.1%

Circum. inches (mm)
65.08 (1653.11) 66.81 (1697.09) 1.73 (43.98) 2.7%

Sidewall Height inches (mm)

Revolutions per mile (km)

Speedometer Difference

Last call for any input before making the plunge.

If not it looks like I'm out of options, so if I do see anything here to change that dilemma, I guess I'll be the guinea pig for 150 rear size on the ABS. Will let everyone know if the ABS light stays on due to the speed difference of front to back tires. Honda have not responded, probably consulting their legal department. Lol.

Chris, would a slightly different size front tire, as well, fool the ABS that all was OK,?
-would motorcycle dealers have an answer to this issue with ABS,,?
Darn shame, this.

Have you actually asked the supplying dealer if they can source you the correct tyre?
Its on the official parts list 42711-K04-931 so they have no excuse for not being able to get you one.

That small change shouldn't have any effect on the ABS system, unless it's that unbelievably sensitive. But yes, I've searched just about everywhere I can think of and the stock size tire doesn't seem to exist. I would call that an issue with the Forza.

Not an issue with the Forza, its an issue with the north american importers.
In the UK there are plenty options available.

Fair point. But despite who's to blame, having several tire choices and quick replacement would be a nice thing, and so far it seems that neither are really available for the Forza here. Am I still saving for one? Yes. Could I change my mind if something else comes along? Yes. But for now, we're aiming for the Forza.

I understand the problem very well and sympathise with my colonial cousins across the pond.
When I bought the PCX four years ago I ran through the rear tyre in 4700 miles.
When I tried to find a replacement there were none available in tyre retailers and trust me I looked long and hard.
In the end I had to shell out £70 to the local Honda shop for an IRC OEM tyre which is a horrendous price for a 125 scooter tyre.
(PCX rear tyres start at £25 now)
By the time I needed the next one Michelin had got the City Grip available and Pirelli had the Diablo, but it was more than a year after I bought the PCX when these tyres became available.

Interestingly Pirelli have a Diablo in 140/70-13 and its listed on their north american site.

I think I have the solution!!!! Next time I go to the Honda dealership I'll call it a "tyre" not "tire". Seems to work for the Brits. Being Canadian I believe I have that option. eh.

Seriously though thanks GN2 and everyone for your help. I'm just chalking this up to being one of the first buyers of a new model. It is what it is. Probably will have better options after its been around for a couple of years like in Europe. This is the first year (2014) here.

The Forza has been on sale in the UK since August 2013, I got mine in September.

here's another option.....
I've bought many bike tires from these guys over the last 12 years.

http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog ... ?cPath=362

they have free shipping so the individual tire price may seem higher than other sources....
places like Motorcycle Superstore can beat their price if you order enough stuff to get free shipping (usually 2 tires will do it.)

They offer a Dunlop SX01 in the right rim sizes for the Forza.

http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog ... 62_392_393

At the top left you can search by tire size and lower, by application and manufacturer....
I counted at least 8 14" front tires and 10 13" rear tires that should work on the Forza.

How well they work in combination with ABS is anyone's guess.....that will be trial and error.

The dealership where I bought mine suggested that with ABS, both front and rear tire should be replaced at the same time to preserve the antilock feature...
that just seemed wasteful to me, since I usually wear out 2-3 rear tires (3000-6000 miles) for every front tire (9000-12000 miles).

Dealers are sometimes very good at thinking up money making scams like that.

My Forza front tyre is up around 12,000 miles now and looks like it will easily do another 3000-4000 miles.

I bought the correct size City Grip for my PCX150 from revzilla. The original IRC rear lasted 8,000 miles. The front is still on at 13,000. The new Michelin is ok in every way. But I wouldn't say it is better in any way. Maybe it will last a little longer. My fuel economy went up as the original tire became more worn. And went way down by 5% with the new tire. But it is back up now with 5,000 on the Michelin. Interestingly, as bald as the old tire was when I took it off, the odometer only changed 1-2% lower with the new tire.
