CVT mods for PCX 150?

Post by dasshreddar »

So, I thought I would start a new thread focusing on the pcx 150's cvt. Instead of bits and pieces of info around the forum...

Here is what I would like to get most out of modifying my cvt, More acceleration from 45mph to about 65mph.

I don't really need more top speed, my "tire adjusted" top speed of 71mph is fine with me, but I will gladly accept more ;)
Right now I'm thinking of getting DR.Pulley sliders for the stock variator, not sure what weight sliders/rollers would be best.
And I don't know if the pcx 150 and pcx 125 cvt parts are all that interchangeable?
And has anybody done any clutch upgrades?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

:ugeek: here are my first test results w/ feelings

top speed gain of 3mph 8)
steep ass uphill speed gain of 5mph :D
improved mid-range(what I wanted) :D
"shiftiness" :|
belt wear? :|
mpg? :|

6,000 miles and I am just starting to get a slight belt chatter when it is really cold out. I haven't looked at the belt lately but top speed is still 68 mph which I hit once every day. So it can't be very worn.

Is that 6000 miles on the original belt?

I've noticed I can't get out of "first gear" with the sliders now...(hitting the rev limiter at 45mph(speedo indicated) :x

the first week with the sliders the shift to "second" was automatic, then it seemed like slowly over time until now I would
have to back off the throttle(rev drop) to shift into second, and now it does not want to shift into second at all... has anyone had this problem with there sliders? ( variator lock out some was talking about)???

for a temporary fix I've installed 3 of the original rollers and 3 drP sliders back in the variator top speed has dropped back only 1mph to 69mph(speedo indicated)
But, all other cvt performance levels seem about back to stock now  .

What are you running for the rest of the drivetrain. Not stock? What weight sliders.

My only cvt mod is the 12g sliders.

Something is obviously wrong. The DrPulley sliders at 12gm work perfectly in my PCX150, pulling at 7,900 rpm when I pin it and increasing top speed 4%.

Never ever mix sliders and rollers...they're different and not compatible, may do some damage to vario it self...

Is it possible that you installed the sliders the wrong way around somehow?

No I put them in the right way, do they need graphite lube or something? I wonder if it has something to do with the belt or sliders sticking?( you're worn belt may work better...?)
Or is there suppose to be any additional washer I need to install?

HELP... IS ANYBODY ELSE USING DR.PULLEY SLIDERS ON A STOCK PCX 150?

The weight of the sliders/rollers is evenly distributed, so I think uneven wear to the sliders/rollers would be the only thing that could go wrong.
Should I get a new vario, if so which one? And can I use the stock pcx belt? (I would want mostly midrange out of a new vario).

I have Dr Pulley Sliders but not on the stock variator, I have the NCY kit installed. From what I have seen and read, they would work fine with the stock variator as well.

I have read this before... Yes you need to shim the variator with sliders. It can cause your very issue of the belt slippage. Shim the variator and go from there. The washer goes between the case and the variator. Use a copper crush washer and forget it.

The shim only helps to correct for a belt shudder on first take off (which my PCX with sliders still doesn't have). The lack of a shim won't explain why his bike was redlining at 45mph.

Ok I'll try to make his short...
A low speed shudder means that the belt is slipping. When the belt slips it wears the same as when you spin the tires on your car. We have 1 mm of wearable surface on our drive belts before they need replaced. It is highly possible that his belt was slipping the whole time and is now in need of replacement.

Two questions. How many miles are on your variator and is it going into full lock up now? Take off your drive belt cover and watch the action o the variator. Have someone slowly increase the throttle with the bike on its center stand. Obviously wear eye protection when doing this and do at your own risk.

Measure the max width of the belt with some cheap digital calipers from any auto parts store. Mine is still 21.5mm after 8,000 miles. His sliders worked good at first and then got slower and slower in top speed. Then he put 3 rollers back in and it is now working fine. Maybe the nut was working loose after the sliders were first put in.

DOH! I did have them in wrong, I put them in this way . see A

not sure why they actually seemed to work for as long as they did???
my belt is right around 21.5mm and I only have about 900miles.
I only did a stand test, but now i'm hitting the rev limiter at 73mph 8)
i'll post up a road test when I get a chance.

:ugeek: interesting side note, I put them in this way by accident. see B, and hit the rev limiter at 57mph.
I imagine you could put them in a bunch of different ways for different rev limits ;) :)
