Hills... What helps?

Post by Mgalutia88 »

Ok guys, let's put our heads together. Besides an aftermarket variator what mods increase hill pulling abilities? I'm running 13 g rollers right now(they came with my new variator). Today we had a strong wind out of the south and I found myself fighting to hold 60mph at wot.
1. Do sliders help and what weight? 10-12g what would be best?
2. Would a kitaco contra spring help?
I'm planning on upgrading the rear gears so a loss in speed is acceptable for hill power

My 12g sliders make what used to be a 45mph max hill into a 50mph max hill. :)
Maybe try a shorter tire? size not sure, fool around with that tire calculator.

I hadn't thought about a different tire size. Not sure if I really want to go there though. I'm planning on a set of Pirelli diablos.

Try it and find out, sounds like black magic voodoo to me

Yeah shorter tire might cause center stand to scrape the ground more... :|
The stock front tire used as rear tire might help by 1 or 2 mph.

Bigger tires are the way too go, I'm loving mine :D

Will a 140-70-14 fit on the stock wheel and will there need to be any modifications?

Here is what I have on mine.
The front is a 120/70-14
The rear is a 140/70-14 There was minimal clearance on the rear inside mud guard but I was able to lift it a bit with a zip tie so that it doesn't rub when I go over a bump.
You can see pics of it here http://hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1273 to see what it looks like with the bigger tires.

How do they affect handling? Any adverse effects?

I got the same size tires as kramnala :)
Handling is smoother on rough surfaces. Imho the whole ride quality is improved.
But, your speedo will be off by 4mph...which may or may not be a bad thing ;)
And you said you can do 77mph with your ncy variator, you should now be able to do 81mph real mph (gps verified) 8)
Of course they won't help you any more than stock with your hill climb needs.

Since the bike's speedometer is off by 4-5 mph as it is, would a set of 14" tires bring the speedometer more inline with what it accurately should read? Where did you zip tie it??

First off, the majority of pcx 150s have speedometers that are dead accurate.
My only concern with the plus sizing to a 140-70-14 is the handling characteristics, can it be laid over as sharply? Pirelli doesn't offer many 14" tire sizes

There was a bolt hole open at the top of the mud guard which is normally used to fasten the air breather, but I had swapped out the breather with a canister type one. I ran the zip tie from there to the frame above.

Mine are Michelin City Grips. There was an immediate difference in the positive response. I can't comment too much on laying it over as my riding is exclusively in the city, but the little bit I have laid it over, it has felt good.

I never gps verified the stock tires, but I'm sure my speedo was correct in stock form.

140-70-14s are much more common than 100-90-14s.
Pirelli makes diablos in that size, mine are Pirelli gts 23/24.
Laying it over no problem, you could actually lean over more with a bigger tire(more ground clearance).
And if you compare the two sizes in gravel or dirt, there is no comparison. 8)

I went way down on the mass when I switched to DrPulley sliders. From the original 18 gm rollers to 12 gm. The pulling rpm increased to 7,900 which is more where you want it to be to get max power to the road but my weighted hill climb test gave the same speed even though the rpms were a bit higher. If you are running at 60 mph up your hill, you are already past the rpm of where the variator weights will be locked all the way out so changing their mass won't change anything at that speed. 60 mph is already very fast for any hill. I don't think you will gain anything by changing the tire size or final gearing. You would have to find more power by doing engine mods such as larger displacement, loud exhaust, and a good wide band logging fuel controller.
