clever ignition key on pcx

Post by aptcomment »

When I bought my pcx the salesman expertly demonstrated how to use the key commenting on the clever design and in particular how Honda were the only builders to come up with the magnetic security feature which closes the ignition opening once the steering lock is engaged and the key is removed.
Enter the ignition slot opening key. (a star shaped carbuncle mounted at 45 degrees on the key handle.)
This is awkward to use beyond reason. Great force is needed to keep the key entered in the shallow opening; lack of room makes it difficult to maintain this force as you turn your hand in the required direction.
In short, not very clever Honda.

On mine the shutter stayed open with the key out and I almost never closed it, too much of a nuisance.
These shutters are not unique to Honda, plenty other scooters have them.

When I bought my used 2010, it only had one key. I went to the guy at the top of my street who sells keys out of a cart and he made me 3 of them, including the magnet insert.

I never use the shutter ..... which may make some shudder.

I always use the shutter, prevents screwdriver attacks. I've seen videos were it took a thief 10 seconds to jimmy the lock and ride off like he was the owner, don't be lazy, put the steering lock on and close the shutter.

Well I would love to find a key blank for my 2015 and I don't care about that locking thing on the top.

Does the Phrase: Use it or Lose "it" apply?
Possibly. Anything (esp today) can happen.
Close all yer doors and lock them. Same idea.
Oh wait! You don't lock them either?
Ok, I get it (or, I could come get it :)

The not so good: The key's opener is soft, so if you're "off" on inserting it, well, you know what happens.

Agree with the OP. Although I use it everytime it can be a pain in the backside if you have a bunch of keys or wearing thick gloves. Limits the amount of space to operate. Also annoying when you dismount and realise you forgot something under the seat having already removed keys. You then have to go through opening the ignition cover, inserting key etc.

It is much easier to use the hex part of the key on the shutter socket if it's on a key ring, then that is put on your key ring, So you have plenty of room to maneuver it when attaching it to the next socket. Once I Did that, I never had a problem.

Not had a problem with mine...maybe if I was doing some kind of old style Le Mans race with a "run to the bike" start it might be an issue.
Malossi 10.5g rollers
Malossi yellow clutch springs
Malossi yellow variator spring

Mine works fine. Just like the one on my Suzuki. I'm just too lazy to use it.

I agree. A pain in the butt to use; but I use it all the time. Not the smartest design I've seen.
Love my PCX!!
