changed final drive oil

Post by cstruck »

I have 600 miles on my 2017 pcx150 and decided to change the oil in the gearbox, glade I did. The oil had "lots" of shiny specs in it I could see even without the microscope. I had ran the bike for 5 minutes at 20-30mph to warm and circulate the oil before I drained it. Refiled with 10w30 Mobil1.

Smart move, I experienced the same at 600m. For my PCX it turns out that 1qt oil will exactly fill both the engine and the final drive.

I also had very minute shiny metal particles in my 2017 final drive oil when I changed it also. I think I waited until about 1000 miles though before I did the first one. Scheduled replacement is once every two years the last I knew. :geek:

Seeing minor twinkles in rear end oil is normal in the first couple changes.. Unlike an engine where the crankcase parts mesh in unison, the gears smash into each other and even though they are hardened/heat treated, they polish themselves by giving off these minor specs.

didn't change mine until around 6000 kms, the honda mechanic didn't bother to do it either during the maintenance schedule.

didn't see any metal particles, or probably didn't look hard enough. not bothered by it though..
Everything looks better from the inside of a motorcycle helmet...
