stutter, close to cut off whilst riding

Post by ahulleman »

Good afternoon all,

So i have a 2018 PCX 125 with just over 13k on the clock so not a lot.
This morning my bike almost cut out when pulling away on a dual carriage way (no fun). It didnt cut out completely but sounded like it was about to. Let go on the throttle, opened up again and did it again... about 4/5 times when the symptoms stopped and carried on as always.
Now on my way back home from work, it did the same thing again. So when i was at a trafficlight, i held my brakes and throttled up... same thing happened again but noticed aswell then when i was idling, the engine almost stalled like the idle speed was to low...
Im thinking fuel injection/sparkplug maybe but dont really know?

Has anyone had any similair problems and know what this could potentially be?!
This bike is my only mode of transport and depend on it heavily as i have no public transport to and from my workplace!

When was the bike last serviced ? Oil, plug & filter. If not in the last year then I would start with that. Id also be checking the fuel lines for any deterioration and any breathers too. If you know all that's good then my next port off call would be checking the belt and clutch are in spec. After that I'd be looking for electrical gremlins. Was it wet today or hotter than usual ?

Bike was serviced last month same time as MOT.
fitted new sparkplug and air filter and full oil change.
(I service my bike every 6 months religiously)

It did it again this morning, on the exact same location but actually nearly cutting off to where I had to pull over.. so now I'm sort of starting to think it's at a certain temperature only..

what could be happening is that the gas pump is heating up and doing this.. mine was heating up because the pump filter was falling apart and the injector filter was clogged..but I had these hiccups until I found out (until I stopped of walking there was only a flash ) when doing the screening tests I found the injector clogged

Think i might have bitten off more than i can chew!
So took out my underseat storage box (took me 3 hours as i got no clue what i am doing lol)
Looked at the block, and basicly parked up my bike in its shed lol.
I tried looking for video's etc but cannot really find anything specific to the PCX.
Does anyone know of any videos?
I got a Haynes Manual but its all a bit vague to me.
Im trying to inspect the injectors. I know my sparkplug is good as that has been replaced 6 months ago. Same as my airfilter. All my fluids should have been done last month during its service and MOT. (engine oil looked clear)

I don't think their is any literature on them to my knowledge but I'm sure some off the folks on here can help you with information for it

Wow never seen that before on a bike. Might fit inline filter on mine now

now in the summer holidays i'm going to make a new fuel line for my pcx with a gasoline filter .. because the idea is, if the pump goes back to letting pieces of the filter go or some garbage pass that will be caught by the filter that i'm going to put in the line, thus preventing it from clogging the injector

The good thing is of all the 1000's of Honda scooters in use over the years, and from following this forum, this is an extremely rare occurence, even for those with many years use and 10,000's of miles on them.

ahulleman,

I would recommend trying to track down a copy of the Honda Factory Service Manual. It is WAY better than a Haynes manual and should help guide you through any service you're trying to perform. I'm not sure if there is a UK-specific vendor but in the US, Helm Inc are the ones to talk to. www.helminc.com

Sounds like the OP is lacking the necessary knowledge needed to diagnose the problem. I suggest he takes it to the repair shop and let them run the tests (compression, timing, performance of the fuel and ignition systems, sensors, exhaust performance, etc). There can be too many things causing these symptoms for the novice to properly diagnose and repair this while blindly asking for advice and replacing unrelated parts.

First of all, thanks for all the replies!
Sorry about the long delay, have had family issues to deal with.

So ive tracked down the problem and its basically water/moisture in my fuel system.
If i leave my scooter for more than 2 days, water sinks down the bottom and collects in my fuel line ( i think).. Hence its always on the same locations it nearly stalls...

So does anyone know of a way to drain my tank and remove the water without having to remove my fuel tank?

Can you syphon the fuel[water] out of the tank? Most newer cars have anti-syphon devices that prevent that. Not sure about the scooters.
gas is lighter than water so, you'll need to get the syphon below the the fuel. If using a clear piece of tubing, you'll probably see when the water
changes to fuel. Then again..............if you want to play it safe.........remove both [water/fuel] and start fresh.

Disconnect the fuel line and drain from there?
