Average fuel per bar?

Post by tildarama1 »

Hi,

I just fuelled up for the first time after 50miles (the fuel gauge was showing 50% of the bars and filled up about 3.5ltr). Mine seems to say FULL for about 30-40miles. I have now ridden an additional 50miles and the gauge shows 2 missing bars. (It is possible that Honda didn't give me a 'full' tank and that the constant stop, start etc of the CBT day consummed varying amounts of fuel.)

How many miles is everyone getting for the first bar? (I know riding techniques/speed effects this.)

And how much fuel is supposed to be left with 1-2 bars? (My manual doesn't seem to tell me.)

THANK YOU ALL!

Average fuel per bar?

Post by Alibally »

I get about 40ish miles before the gauge moves and once it gets below half way it seems to just disappear down quickly. I fill it when it flashes at about 120-130 miles and it takes about 5.5 litres giving you about 0.8 litres left.

On the first bar everyone should answer roughly thee same because of the shape of the tank.

When one bar is left the manual says taht you have around 1.5 liters left. And when it stars to flash it would have decreased further.

Tildarama1 - This topic has been in my thoughts as well. Lately I have been riding mostly highway miles, back and forth to work and the 1st bar was disappearing at roughly 23 - 28 Miles US. If I am riding more conservatively in town, etc. I get more like 35-40 miles.

On the same highway trips, I have been getting roughly 50-60 miles after the 4th bar has vanished. From that point, I am seeing only 5-7 miles per bar until down to the last one. Again this is US miles.

I usually fill up at the 2nd to last bar or the last before it flashes. However, when I did fill up last week just as I pulled in to the gas station the bar was flashing and I still only got 1.2 US Gallons. I have never got more over 1.2 gallons when I fill up.

FYI - I have been trying to keep at 55 MPH lately to try and improve milage, but I am still only between 80-85 MPG US.

I normally get 40-45 miles on the first bar, then the gauge drops but not really steadily (ie the next bars each extinguish themselves increasingly quickly) so that experience (and keeping on eye on the trip meter) is better for me than watching the gauge. On my last fill up with the last bar flashing I'd used 5.8 litres so wouldn't want to chance it much further.

A better way to measure fuel economy and remaining balance is to watch your trip meter. Take a habit of paying attention to it. It is way more accurate once you have embraced it.
I have learned from my mistakes, and I am sure I can repeat them exactly.

+1 the trip meter is your friend, always fill the tank full and zero the trip.
You'll soon get used to how long a tank lasts.
When the last bar starts flashing you have got over 20 miles left.

Notes on my last fuel up:

117 TOTAL MILES
Only one work trip for 1/2 the miles. Rode mostly 40-45 MPH during the rest.
Milage bar intervals:
35-42-52-66-81-88-96-106 (started flashing at 114).

The trip meter is your best bet on this bike. The fuel gauge is definitely not linear. However, most people seem to be having the same experience... First bar lasts awhile then the rest drop off increasingly quicker.

On full tank first bar lasts approx 40-50 miles then drops approx 10 miles per bar.

The last bar flashes approx 120-125, i've had 136 miles out of it before and it still had another 0.6 litre left.

To play it safe, fill up when you are on the last bar or when you are low.

1st fuel up with new Ermax windscreen. 3 highway trips at 25 miles each. Was able to ride much more comfortably at 55 MPH with the new screen. Rode consistently at 55 on highway.
Milage bar intervals 31-36-46-65-80-89-96-two bars left.

As others here have said, the fuel indicator bars are purely abstract and are not even linear from bar to bar. If nothing else they are eye-candy to make the instrument gauge look...interesting.

Don't read any more into it than that.

I can tell you from what others have observed as well as myself that when the fuel gauge begins flashing when reaching near empty, that means you have approximately .5 gallons which is your reserve fuel. As always YMMV. :)

It's after you are done with your scooter or motorcycle for the day. As opposed to the old saying "one for the road", it's a beer bar after the road.

The bars are just a rough indication, i always go by the miles done since the daily commute distance are similar.

I do approx 20-30 miles a day a few long stretch of roads then i hit the city.

I get on average 110-115 mpg (UK MPG), it rarely ever touches 60mph, 50-ish max and this is for 10 secs on a long stretch.
