2015 PCX 150 top speed

Post by OldGuy »

From the 2013 and 2015 shop manual I see that they use a different drive belt on the 2015. I still have about 20-30 miles to go before I reach the 600 mile first service. Today, I got on the freeway for a few miles, and while I didn't impead traffic my new PCX did seem to limit top speed at about 63-64 mph. I have read that
PCX s are limited at 70 mph. Has anyone else reached the speed that seem to start cutting out on the 2015 model?

Stats on my 2015 since purchase;
Odometer currently 1100 miles
best mpg 114 now averaging 103-104 and gradually lessening (due to more confident handling and perhaps valves needing service)
best top speed on flat 64 - 65 mph and yes a feel a governor or perhaps some other type of limiter coming into play at top end. Could be mistaken for engine problem but I seriously doubt it. Slow down before you make the crash survivor list in my signature

currently
no issues - stock performance - very happy!

My 2013 clearly hits 68 mph before the limiter kicks in. It also seems to be right on as far as the speedometer goes. For the relatively light weight it is plenty fast IMO. If I want to go faster I will get something heavier. I think 64-65 mph is pretty fast on these too.

On my 2013 I also have hit 68 mph and the limiter kicked in.

Very interesting :geek: , you guys with the 15s need to GPS verify your rev limited top speed, and report back.
The new 15 speedos could be off??? :?
My 13 stock rev limited at 67, but speedo was accurate(most of the 13 150s were accurate, many of the 125s were off).

Could be some speeding tickets issued if that is the case. :P Normally, they tend to overstate the speed.

I did not know that... I will do it today and see what my Garmin has to say about the new belt on the 2015's.

In the mean time, maybe someone could elaborate on the term 'rev limited top speed' for us freshmen. My Segway had a top speed of 12 mph even though it might go 25 owners never knew because there was no way to hack it. I guess it has an electronic rev limiter LOL.

There is a built in speed limiter of sorts. At 68 I can hear the rpms hitting max and falling a bit. It kind of reverberates a bit between the max and a few hundred rpm lower. I believe it would be an electronic CDI type limiter on a Honda. You can hear it working. They sell programmable ones to modify sport motorcycles. It might be changeable via software by the factory/dealer but unsure.

You'll gain a few MPH once you drain the break-in oil and put a few more miles on it.

I ran flat and downhill, up and back on the same stretch or asphalt. The speedometer and Garmin NUVI GPS are precisely accurate in all spectrum whether you are going 20 or 50.

2015 PCX top speed is 63-64 and it doesn't make any difference if you are going downhill or down wind.
1150 miles OD - (no valve service yet)
182lbs full gear
3/4 tank of gas

who do we see about that?

I might call the US Regional Office. They can point you in the right direction. I bet the Technical Manual covers the speed limiter too. If nothing else you can get an explanation of why it is how it is.

By "rev limited top speed" I mean you can't go any faster even downhill (unless you do a full stealth ninja bomb, by coasting down a big hill... )

But, 63-64 well that just sucks. Time for a variator(around 10+ additional mph) and or sliders(1 or 2 additional mph).

p.s. what is Honda's claimed top speed for the 15? (13 was 68).

I don't think I would want to kick up the limiter. The Honda engineers may have a good reason for lowering it a bit. Variator/sliders sounds like a better low cost option. It can't be more than a few hundred USDs?

It seems that the drive belt on the 2015 model is 0.02 inches wider then the 2013 model, which ends up giving it a slightly different final drive ratio. I don't really understand it, but I think it is something like 10.755 for 2015 versus 10.55 for the 2013. I am guessing that the 2015s reach max rpm at a lower top speed because of this. It is pretty peppy up to that speed though. It is looking like the earlier models are 4-5 mph faster at top speed. I am not a mechanic or engineer so this is just a guess. from the shop manual, there are lots more differences than one would think, just by looking at them side by side.

Alrighy then... if you are pulling up next to a brand new Honda PCX on your 2013 go head on up front because chances are you can leave him in the dust if he gets to cock sure of himself.
Chief says that's just sad for Honda... juicy fruit?

All esp pcx's use longer belts than first gen model, starting with esp 125 slightly longer belt and '13 150 using the longest version of the belt. '15 150 model and '15 125 are back to the '11 version esp 125 length belt. However from experience, best top speed is achieved from shorter belts and since version 1 Pcx 125 had the shortest belt (but also shortest gearing in transmition) it seems to me the first upgrade would be to a new belt but from the v1 125 Pcx model for all Pcx models afterwards...

No stock PCX hits 70 mph. My 2013 had a top speed of 66 when brand new. This started to drift down to 63 with normal belt break in at 1,000 miles. The belts compress width wise and stretch slightly so they don't ride up the front pulley as high or pull down in the back as far. Replacing the 18 gm rollers with 12 gm DrPulley sliders increased the top speed back up to 67 mph where it has stayed. I now have 13,000 miles on the original belt and it hasn't changed.
.
The top speed is limited by the rev limiter which maintains no higher than 9,600 rpm. This is the lagging feeling you experience at top speed. 2011 PCX125's were limited at 62 mph/ 100 kph/ 9,200 rpm to comply with the A1 license law in Europe. There is no use calling Honda. These bikes are normal and there is no way for a dealer to reprogram the ecu. You can get more top speed by going longer with the gearing with a bigger variator or different gears in the back. The lighter sliders are a cheap way to get a couple mph more because the push the front pulley further before hitting the stops and slightly better acceleration at medium speeds as they shift the pulling rpm higher toward the power peak.

I believe that, many a little genus has tried to hack the speed limiter program on Segways only to result in failure. Guess you have to know the password, yet millions lose their identity to credit card hackers every year.

Interesting!!! I may just have to try this in my 2013 PCX150. I mean, it's already going 79mph, but when the belt wears out, I'll order the 2011 PCX125 belt.
