I can assure you Roth was no stranger to facilities with poles. was front row for the first VanHalen tour where they were on their first album and opened for Ted Nugent and I will never forget the first time I heard "Eruption". Eddie stood the guitar world on it's head with his tapping technique and whammy bar. He finished his guitar solo by slamming his guitar down onto a stand and playing for another 5 minutes just by twiddling his effects which were racked in a bomb case.
.
When it was current, I always under appreciated Roth's lyrics which at their best carried a playful or powerful yet accessible man of the street vibe I seem to relate to better now. "Who's that babe with the fabolous shadow"

Is it possible that Sammy Hagar's Three Lock Box song was influenced by the guitar riff in Mean Street? Interesting!

Sammy also did some of his best work with VanHalen after the shocking break up with Diamond Dave.

Yeah seriously Sendler, with that extensive list you put together, you are really missing out on Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.

I would recommend the Deadwing album as a starting point:

That list is a few years old now. I have probably twice that many bands again with one song each on my play list includin Porcupine tree from "The Incident". Time for an update.

Holy crap, HOW did I miss this thread when it starts off with a RUSH song? Obviously (as sendler2112) would know, my username kinda gives away what my favorite band is. I dabbled playing bass back in the 80's since everyone else in high school played guitar. Made it much easier to play in garage bands since I was the only one to call. LOL. Sadly none of them ever went anywhere.

Anyway, beside Rush, I love Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Triumph, VH, Genesis... most of the "classic" type stuff. Then I add in Tori Amos, Lindsey Sterling, Rob Zombie, '80's stuff, and Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. ;-)
