Puncture

Just found a nail in my rear tyre

. What do you guy's do, fix it your self or take it the tyre shop? I was thinking of having a go at fixing it myself, as it's in the centre of the tyre. Any advice?

some say you should only plug a bike tire for long enough to get it to the shop and put an new tire on. others say its no problem, dont worry about it and ride it. i know a guy that rode a plugged tire on a sports bike for track riding!

if its in the rear tire, a blowout is somewhat less dangerous. i do have a friend that had a plug blow out on his skywave though. it didnt cause a problem luckily but it might have...

personally, i err on the side of caution and get a new tire in such situations, but i am not a cheap ass!

I've had a blowout on the highway before on a Honda Reflex. The rear tire went, and I was barely able to control it. I never, ever want to experience that again. I wouldn't risk a patch unless it is just until you get to a shop, like haildamage said. Stay safe and get a new tire.

As for patching tires on cars, go for it. It's not like a tire failing on a car can be fatal, even if you get a blowout at highway speeds.

if the hole is pretty much centre,then get it plugged properly at a tyre centre,had one on my x max and it was fine,just besure to check your pressures one a week to be safe
but if the tyre has little tread left,then go for a new one......

I've ridden with plugs for 1000's of miles.. I'm one of the guys who will plug it, and forget about it. In fact, I just had to plug my rear tire less than a week ago. I still have maybe 2,000 miles of tread left, so I'm going to ride it until it's time to replace due to tread. However, with a front wheel, I tend to replace the tire more quickly... but I'll plug it, order a tire, and ride the bike until it arrives and replace it when I get around to it. I've never had an issue, but maybe if I ever experienced a blow out I would have a different opinion.

Dave did your tire have a plug/patch before it blew out?

This is a hot-button issue for some people so watch out!

No plug on my tire that blew, but it was worn past its wear point. I've had a car tire blowout from a plug though, on my old Infiniti G20.

Looking over the tyre i've found a split so i'm going to replace it. I've phoned a few shops and all but one said they could'nt find any
that size listed, but this one guy say's he can get me some Michelin's by Wednesday, Front - £55, Rear - £57.50

That seems ridiculously high. I would search for them online, find a cheap set, get them shipped, and have a shady tire shop on the bad side of town replace them for a few pounds. There's a shop near me that I take all my tires to that will take off the tire and mount a new one for $5. They don't balance them though, so you have to put dynabeads in your tire.

Michelin don't make a tyre that fits the pcx!

Your'e stuck with IRC - probably only available from your local Honda dealer.

It'll cost you about those prices for the new tyres fitted and the old ones disposed of.

What are the tyre names? Pirelli told me that don't make a tyre to fit the pcx (the diablo mentioned on their website isn't yet produced). I've looked for michelin in our sizes on ebay.co.uk and .com as well as michelin website - no joy. The only results I get on ebay for these sizes are IRC.

IMO the IRC ones are cheap... and if you're going to replace the tire every time you get a puncture, IRC will save you some dough. This WILL happen again... I've probably had 10 nails in motorcycle tires, and only 2 or 3 in my car. The small wheel base makes them more susceptible to damage.

Phoned the tyre shop today to make sure he had the right tyres and he assured me that he had recieved the tyres this morning
and that the sizes are correct. The tyres are Michelin City Grip (it seems the michelin web site needs to be updated). As for the stock tyres on ebay once you add on postage, fitting and balancing (unless your able to do this yourself) , cheap tyre's are suddenly
expensive as i would be paying the same money for a lesser brand tyre. Anway i'll find out for sure on thursday when i've got time
to take the bike in.

Ya I guess they're a lot cheaper here in the states, and I usually replace bike tires myself =) let us know what you think about the new tires!

Eddie - how do you usually replace them yourself? I can swap out a tire on my bicycle no problem, but if I try getting the scooter tires off with a tire iron, I don't have any luck...

PT63- I'm very interested to hear how you like the Michelin tires, and how well they wear so be sure to report back when you have more information. How many miles did you get from your original tires before you had to replace them?

Hey dave. I use a couple vice grips on the tire to break the bead... then a lot of muscle with 2 tire irons. I kinda cross one over the other and use the one on the bottom for leverage.. This is how I get it started... the rest is improvising a LOT because each time is a little different. It also helps if you can recruit someone to help you hold the tire/wheel... I haven't tried removing the PCX tires yet, I've only done a tire change on my SV650 and that had a 16" rim... It might be easier with a larger rim, but I wouldn't know for sure
