The new "Budget" PCX150 in Asia

Post by clemence »

Guys, I just received my new Honda Vario 150.
It shares the same base engine as PCX150 minus several features to cut the price down to almost half. But in reality this little brother is definitely more agile, faster, and perhaps has better fuel consumption due to it's lighter weight.

Vario150:
Source link: http://www.astra-honda.com/produk/kenda ... pUe8_l95qw
Engine capacity: 149,3cc
Weight: 109kg
Power: 9,3 kW/8500 rpm
Torque: 12,8 Nm/5000 rpm
Price: IDR 20.200.000 / USD 1.463

PCX150:
Source link: http://www.astra-honda.com/produk/kenda ... pUfdfl95qw
Engine capacity: 152,9cc
Weight: 131kg
Power: 9,9 kW/8500rpm
Torque: 13,7 Nm/5500rpm
Price: IDR 39.800.000 / USD 2.882

With those alone there's no way PCX150 will win the market here. For USD 1.955 you'll get the ABS version of Yamaha Nmax 150!!
Anyway, even though I still envy the comfort and riding position of PCX150, this little one is no joke! 0 - 100km/h is easy. Acceleration is smooth but torquey and will smokes any PCX150 behind. Fuel consumption so far (I have just filled one tank full) is in the 48km/liter. This Vario 150 is a better companion if you often carry big stuff which you can't put under the seat like medium hiking bags, vegetables groceries, etc... The deck is spacey and proved to be very useful for Indonesian.
The LED headlamp is a nice addition, brighter and more useful than the halogen type, also less glare produced (better optics). The idling stop switch enables you to switch when auto shut down is more annoying than helping such in a heavy traffic jam. The seat is still too stiff like the earlier Vario 125 or it's just me - too skinny. Traffic handling is almost the same with 125 version, but definitely better than PCX150. I haven't try it enough for long distance riding, still waiting for my license plate.

But as you can see from the link, there are many features excluded to make it cheap. From the engine department the most significant loss is the absence of Manifold Air Pressure and Intake Air Temperature sensors. But Vario 150 now uses double cog belt. I don't know if it can be used in PCX150.

One thing I really don't like from both Vario150 or PCX150 is the combi brake system. I sometimes need to brake when I'm already cornering because of unexpected events such as chicken/dog/MOSTLY cat suddenly crossing the road! With combined braking, it's more likely I'd end up on the asphalt. But after checking the mechanism in Vario 150, it's easy to disconnect the front lever from the combi system. It's just such a waste of money, I think. An ABS would be more effective for advance rider like us. I know Honda designed this combi brake system for novice users who often forget to use the front brake when panicking with slow riding speed.
Overall I'm satisfied with this purchase. And as always, there will be hours of fun trial and errors awaits....

OMG, it's not the "clean" file hosting :(
Maybe the moderator can remove this? I can repost it again using safer file hosting. Sorry for the trouble

I must be looking at the wrong Vario because this one is bad azz and no way is it half the cost of PCX. Makes me want to rip the front fender off mine.

A bit confused reading above - you say 'For USD 1.955 you'll get the ABS version of Yamaha Nmax 150' yet you then mention CBS. I did not followyour original link due to the comments following it!, but I looked at the official Honda site as posted above this reply and seached for new Vario 150 and that states it has the old not so great CBS - so which is it?

I find the PCX is horrid to ride in strong winds as I get blown around quite a bit - esp. bad when it's a sudden strong wind. Therefore I'm loath to ride a more powerful but 20KG lighter bike in our kind of climate (should that ever replace the Vision 110)

Vario 150 comes in two versions but it's only cosmetic. Both version has the old CBS system which is great for us who don't really need it. We can disconnect the combi brake easily.
Vario150 sales fight directly with Yamaha Nmax150 (closer to PCX150 by class but priced closer to Vario 150). I was trying to say that in my country people rarely consider to buy PCX150 because of it's price. If we want a premium 150cc scooter above Vario 150 then Yamaha Nmax 150 is the best bet in many aspects due to it's price point.

SAFE links =)

If I lived in Bali :) I think the Vario 150 would be near perfect!

Nothing better than island breezes cruising on a naked(nearly) scooter 8)

Oh yeah I think the CBS system sucks too. :x

In the UK or Europe, I doubt Honda will change it on any bike below the Forza 125 as that has ABS and it would loose market share if they added ABS to the PCX 125 (and 150 in Europe). Strange as it's a good safety measure and one which almost all of us would want for a modest increase in price.

Wot he said.

PCX in Malaysia is 149cc. The 153 generally is for the USA where it has to be above 150 to be allowed on the expressway. Note: Yamaha Nmax has a 155cc version for the same reason. If you need the extra just, as the Indonesian's would say, "bore up" to 58mm from 57.3mm

When you go in for service have a look at the CVT. If the variator is hexagon shaped like the PCX change it for a round one from the old Vario ;)

Selamat siang Wasp! It's noon already here hahahaha

I only go for the service to get the first two free oil changes at 500km and 4000km ;) . I don't want to spoil the fun inspecting all the elements myself.
Yes, I will work the variator as soon as I test it's standard capabilities. I have a set of PCX150 15gr Dr. Pulley sliders from my stash box. If variator is the same as in the PCX150, then I'll mod it the way I did to my former Vario 125. Proved to be the least buck for the long term bang.
Yup, boring up the bore is easy here. But this tiny scooter is already good for what it's intended to do (for a while). Besides, the gain from extra 4cc would be too small to notice. I'm already light enough at 62kg and could easily pass anyone heavier than me. Sometimes just a little tucking won me over a 5km toll way race by almost a kilometer apart. I plan to buy a Kawasaki ZL 250 to play with. Another great budget friendly machine

The PCX will lose market share in Europe (of which the UK is a part) because it does not have ABS.
Also Honda will not be able to remove the CBS as linked braking is now compulsory for new models up to 125 in Europe.

ABS is A Good Thing and all new road legal motor vehicles should have it.
