Doh! That's terrible Mel, I'm sorry to hear about all the pouring you're dealing with right now. Good luck with the operation, I agree with everyone else, just get it done and worry about the money later. Ugh.

I'm frustrated with the medical system too. My care has actually gotten worse since Obamacare started. Both because my employer gave up their former "cadillac" plan so everyone could have a "good enough" plan. And now that everyone has (or is supposed to have, anyway) insurance, the doctors are overwhelmed. I have to wait a month just to get in to review an x-ray, it's ridiculous. This all started in the last year, too. I think another huge problem is we tax the heck out of the system. We just flooded the medical system with patients without increasing the number of doctors or hospitals. Getting seen is so hard I'm tempted to drive for hours to the nearest VA hospital.

I don't know if there is an answer to fix that stuff. Make medical school cheaper?

Hope you and your wife get sorted, Mel. Can you go to the VA as an ex-coast guard member?

I would love to be able to jump on a plane and go over there for the surgery. That is a very nice offer. Unfortunately we need passports, which take anywhere from two weeks to a month to get. That is way to long of a time. The Specialist said that she has a 2 week window from the time of the accident to get it fixed properly or else there will be serious complications, if she ever hopes to move it again. He said that if she were a little old lady of 85, he would just put it in the sling and see her back in a month because she won't be using that arm again. That October 2nd date for her surgery is past the window, so the surgeon is already worried, but that was the only date available, and it is at the facility all the way across town. I wish we could jump on a plane and just go to one of these countries that has social medicine, but I am betting even jumping on a plane would cause her problems because of cabin pressure. So we can only do what we can here. Thank you for the offer though.

Mel, so sorry to hear this. I have been off the forums for a bit (recovering from an injury that is non riding/vehicle related), and I certainly don't like to come back to hear news like this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mrs.

2 You's, I lived in Canada most of my life and also in England for about a year and a half back in the mid 70's. I didn't think someone who is not a resident could get medical care for an injury suffered out of the country. I.e., could Mel and the Mrs. actually get medical care in the UK for the injuries they suffered in the accident back in the US?

I am guessing that we could only get medical help in the UK if we didn't tell them that we had the accident out of country. Falling down stairs might give the same injury so that excuse would work as well. I don't feel comfortable lying but for $35k to $50k I guess I would, and that is about what the surgery will cost. For right now all I can realistically do is count the days though, no lying involved. As each day passes I see my wife in more and more discomfort so I can only do what I can do. By the way, she is allergic to almost every single pain medication made. The only thing she is able to take right now is Tylenol. She is in a lot of pain. To add to that, she has a severe nickel allergy, which means most of the metal they put in patients could not be put in her. The doctor will have his hands full.

Hey Mel, been thinking about you and Mrs. Mel. Is the surgery still scheduled for tomorrow (Oct 2)?

So far the surgery is still on for tomorrow. The surgeon let my wife know that he found the composite version of the plate and screws that will be used to put her shoulder back together. That is good in that it solves her problem concerning nickel in the plate, which she is highly allergic to. Because she has so many allergies they also expect to keep her in the hospital for a couple of days in case she has an allergic reaction to something.

I had a chance last night to look over the bikes. I think with a little help I should be able to fix both of the. Nothing bent. Just broken plastics and the rear foot pegs on each bike have to be replaced. I am not going to even start on them until all of the other problems have been resolved though. I am not sure if my wife will be able to ride again, so why hurry?

You are a good man Mel God Bless you brother. Sure hope you get back out there but if not you still aren't needing to move up on my bikers scale of life from this incident that's good. No body wants that free scooter until its the last resort... Chief says "at least its free"

Well she came through the surgery. The doctor said it turned out to be a bit more complex due to the way it was broken, but otherwise it was a success. Now she has to catch up on sleep. She will be in the hospital till Sunday while they try to set up some pain management since she has so many allergies to pain meds. He already told her the Physical Therapy will be rough. Well, at least she will be able to move her arm after all of this. Two weeks without pain meds and no arm use was rough.

crash!
I'm in my 60's like Mel and enjoyed his positive posts on riding a scooter
but it seems the highways and byways are now an not much more than an a runway
for distracted aggressive twerps
been a trucker all my life and ask myself is this where I want to play?
seems consideration for others is out of date
so if you are riding one these little machines you must consider
everyone else
we are on the learning curve
maybe the rest will catch up

It is not time to think about what our future will be with our bikes, but I do worry. I have always loved riding. They are not only fun, but allow me to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective, and feel the wind and sun like you really can't when driving a car. However, I fear that this accident may have ended my wife's riding career, and if that is the case I might have a hard time convincing her that I know about safety and follow it when riding. I was the one who walked away from this accident. I have walked away from others in the past. Well, we shall see, after she gets well.

Take your time Mel, we're all pulling for you two.
Maybe a gently used Mazda Miata convertible with ABS and seatbelts.
Put down the top and go for rides.....even in winter in Massachusetts I'd put the top down on my Mustang.....bundle up, heater on full blast and ignore the people laughing at you on the Mass Turnpike.
