2018 PCX150 > 2019 Grom

Post by zroger73 »

A few months ago, I bought a new 2019 PCX150 and an almost-new 2018 PCX150. I had hoped to sell the 2018 to my brother, but he isn’t in a position to buy it anytime soon. I didn’t want two similar scooters, so I traded the 2018 for a new 2019 Grom yesterday. I got all my money back on the PCX and a discount on the Grom. Compared to the PCX, the Grom is slower, less comfortable, louder, not as smooth, and has no storage space, yet it’s more fun to ride and its miniature size makes it’s absolutely adorable! I’ve got my VFR when I want to play with the big boys, my PCX when I want to cruise around in comfort with utility, and the Grom just for fun. :)

I saw one of those Groms on the street the other day a d wondered if it could even be licensed. It is quite small, and to me the rider is nuts to go out in traffic with one. Most SUV drivers can not even see the rider's helmet. That is how small they are.

At least here in Texas, a Grom shares the same requirements and privileges as any other motorcycle.

The Grom is much bigger than a pocket bike, but it still makes the PCX look massive.

The Grom's seat height is 30" - only one inch less than the seat height of my $13,000 VFR800F that weighs twice as much and produces 10x as much power.

The Grom's is capable of exceeding the PCX's top speed, although it's less able. My 2019 PCX will hold 55 MPH up a slight grade where the Grom struggles to hold 50 MPH. The PCX will hold 60-65 on a flat road. The Grom tops out at about 55 MPH.

I've ridden the PCX on the interstate in light traffic and it wasn't too bad.

Since I upgraded my variator my bike has no problem, even on hills, holding it at 55 mph. It can go on the freeways and hold 65 mph easily. It pushes it to top out at 75 mph with the the hills we have in Georgia, especially since Atlanta is at the base of a mountain range (and the fun riding spots are in the mountains.) However, when we are in the mountains the roads are twisting enough that the speed limit is usually 45 mph or less, so definitely no problems there.

I could see riding a Grom in the mountains, but not in Atlanta traffic. It may seem tall enough to you but it is tiny compared with SUVs, and it just gets lost in the traffic, which could easily run over it and not be seen.

My PCX is black and gray - they'd never find it on the pavement.

At least my Grom has some bright green pieces making it easier to find. :)
