Question about top case

Post by gaiusgracchus »

We were thinking about getting a top case (trunk) for the PCX, but have never seen one in person.

It would be nice to have something that could be unlocked easily and removed -- can the Givi or Honda rack mounted top case be removed from the rack easily by unlocking it? Or is it bolted down?

Thanks!

Question about top case

Post by SmellyTofu »

Mine is fixed using the Givi E241 mount on my Coocase. Reason I got the Coocase over the Givi was the brake light system and the remote opening. Although the downside is that the alarm system will draw power out of the battery and it has wiring that you can upgrade (DIY) for brake lights and parking lights. The 36L box takes one helmet and a few other bits.

I guess I am confused because if it it bolted on, it is not easy to remove, but if it is easy to remove it is not secure unless it is locked, right?

i guess you need to see how one works. the givi rack is bolted on and the box attaches to the rack with a quick on/ quick release system. it takes less than two seconds to put it or take it off!

Thanks for the link. I see it can be removed -- looks like the lock prevents it from easy removal. The rack looks like it is plastic, surprisingly enough. Hopefully still secure from theft (insofar as possible).

the base is steel and the mounting plate (flat top part) is plastic. it would be difficult to seperate the box from the rack without the key. it would probably be easier to just break into the case.

You can break into just about any topbox with a screwdriver.

Question about top case

It is after all a glorified plastic box so a hammer would crack it open

Here's mine.

I bought the Honda one. It looks like Givi makes it for Honda. The latching mechanism is just like a few Givi top boxes that I have had in the past.
The Honda rack is bolted down, but the top box can be removed in seconds. You unlock the box then flip a lever to release the back "catch", lift slightly move forward and it is off. Tha lever is separate from the lever that releases the lid of the top box.

Question about top case

Just thinking out loud. If stealing the whole box is an issue, what about drilling holes through the topbox and into the base, then put a bolt from the bottom going up through the base and bottom of the topbox and secured by a split pin so it couldn't be unbolted out.

I like my rack. Today I bought a present for my teenage son. Too big for any topbox.

Hi there,

Could you please let me know what is the coocase that you have got? Is it a 28 or 36 litres? Luxury or Classic?

Thank you.

Beto.

Definitely there are times when the size constraints of a top case get in the way. I agree there are times when nothing is better than a simple rack for strapping on odd-sized luggage.
Here is mine:

While I was mulling over which Givi top case to get, and whether it should be a Monokey or Monolock, my daughter just went ahead and purchased the Honda version that mounts directly to the Honda rack without a Givi universal mounting kit. It's 37 liter and quite nice, but If I had a choice in the matter I would have hunted down a version color matched to my red PCX. But I'm happy my daughter shared in the expenses of our scooter.
Here is the one that my daughter bought for our shared use:

It pops on and off as instantly as a Givi.
