Motor Oil Question

Hi, this is my first post. I hope to learn a lot from you experienced guys out there!

Here's my question: I'm about to do my first oil change, and went to the dealer (the one I bought the scooter from) to get the oil which is specified in my owners manual. According to the manual, I'm supposed to use "10W-30 JASO T 903 standard- MB." However, every drop of oil they carry says "MA" and not "MB." The guy at the sales counter says this isn't an issue, but I'm not sure about that.

What do you guys advise?

Hope this helps.

For four-stroke gasoline engines, the JASO T904 standard is used, and is particularly relevant to motorcycle engines. The JASO T904-MA and MA2 standards are designed to distinguish oils that are approved for wet clutch use, and the JASO T904-MB standard is not suitable for wet clutch use.

I use castrol 10w30 and it's MA

The local honda dealer sells it and it's widely available.

Any 10w30 oil will be fine.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

I 2nd GN2's statement. The Forza has a dry clutch, any synthetic 10w30 will work perfectly fine.

Yup, Dry clutch, only lubing the engine. SO you could use any quality API spec oil you wanted. Why they made a MB oil rating I don't know, Maybe its motorcycle oil for dry clutches? but then it would be car oil? who knows

I've tried almost every 10w-30 I could get my hands on. I changed the oil ever 1000 miles just to try new oil :). My last run, I ran Redline 10w-30 car oil. It gave me the best MPG, and remained smooth, compared to all the others I tried. So I ran it 2000 miles! This will be my oil for a while until I get the urge to try something else. Sure, its expensive, but I like it, and 1 qt every 2k miles, not bad, and I can get it local.

Bottom line, any quality 10w-30 oil will be fine.

I use Amsoil in my diesel truck, and I want to use Amsoil 10w30 Advanced Synthetic. But the rating on it is SL. And the manual states SJ or higher. Will this be okay to run?

You will receive alot of response . Some say to use the spec oil (MB) that the engineers who designed this scooter to use for best operation , others will tell you to put any ol 10w 30 in there. .....MB is in there for a reason.....not conspiracy .

I run Mobil 1 5w40 automotive oil in my PCX. 10w30 ratings have fallen out of fashion now that more modern wide range oils are available. 5w30 is much more common as is 10w40 or 5w40 if you spring for synthetic. It takes less than a quart. Might as well use something good.

Isn't 10w30 better at low temps than 10w40 (less treacle like)? I thought that was the only reason to use 10w30 (any) than common 10w40.

If they are both really 10w when it is cold, they will be the same.

What about the "SJ" issue? The 10w30 on the Amsoil website is rated SL? Am I okay to run this oil? And would it be better to go with a 10w40 instead of 10w30? I live a warmer climate, nights don't get lower than 35 and in the summer reach 100 degrees. I figure 10w30 would be better for hot temperatures when riding

5w50 / 10w30 / 10w40 take your pick..

all of them will be fine for you climate. Honda recommends 10w30 BUT most Honda dealers in the UK (not sure about the US) almost always use 10w40! As i found out when a phoned Honda HQ (uk) after i thought my Dealer made a mistake.

Nearly ANY motor oil with be fine in the PCX along as its changed often. Go with a synthetic over a semi synthetic.

This is an old school wives tale dating back to the 80's when synthetic oils were first introduced and they had some issues. The sooner you switch to full synthetic, the sooner you start getting it's benefits.

I plan on full synthetic. I just wasn't sure what the "SL or better" meant in the manual. Because the Amsoil Advanced Synthetic 10w30 is rated SJ. Sounds like I am in the clear then.

Can't argue as I don't know such things except what I read on this forum, but i've read that advice several times the past week or so from experienced owners.

I find it hard to picture a bunch of old wives in the 80's discussing motorcycle oil.
