It's an oil change and a check. But remember if you'd been dumb enough to shell out $200 for a first service you'd have to justify it to others

Had my 1st service done at the same dealer I bought it from last Monday, cost me £40, could have sworn they quoted £75 when I asked before I bought the bike so said nothing paid my £40 and got out of there quick

Don't blame you. £40 isn't the end of the world. Which dealers

It seems like I'll have to shop around for a quote on my 2500 mile service. Just one quick thought- just had the oil change @600 miles plus check-up (I assume that includes clearances?) so why is the next service due at 2500 when, in my view, it should be at 3100 miles and then every 2500 miles thereafter?

Because the interval is 2500.
The 600 mile first service is additional to catch any problems in manufacturing/assembly/pre-delivery.
No-one is forcing you to follow the recommended service intervals, but in the UK if you don't your warranty is toast.

Taking mine in for it's first service on Tuesday, after this one is done I will go to a local independent guy who is good.

Castles, in err Castleford, imaginative name eh, must have taken them ages to come up with that one

OK 600 mile service done today, that'll be £107 please, of which £89 was the labour charge Dropped bike off at 1000 and bike ready by 1330 so for 3 1/2 hours work.......................................................I'm in the wrong job!!

£89 for 3.5hours labour would be cheap!
They prob spent 1 to 1.5 hours on it then wait an hour or so before they let you know they're done.
(my garage charge £75/h for labour)

Reminds me.. I still have to make friends with a mechanic. anyone know where they hang out?

I worked at a Ford garage as an apprentice and whatever the book said the time was to do a certain repair that was what they charged unless it went over due to other factors. They would never charge the actual time it took to do (which was in most cases less than the time Ford say) so a service would be charged for 3 hours and would take an hour! The thing is, the garage isn't there to help you out, its there to make money and pay for rates, wages, land rent etc

I paid $162 USD for my first service. I am thinking I will do it myself from this point forward. You can pick up a service manual for ~$50 USD.

One thing I'm going to do every year is take off the exhaust and spray that down pipe

You might need to do it more often than that, it's really poor quality, if only they had fitted a stainless one.

Just ordered some Sperex. Takes me back to my old trail bike days..

Ah yes sperex I remember that, you could get it is some weird colours.
Well weird for an exhaust pipe.
I've been using barbeque paint.
It needs doing again and will get done when its time for a new back tyre.
I also painted the swingarm A-bracket it mounts on because it was corroding and looked awful.

I was thinking the same about the A bracket. Does it have a bearing in it?
