USB charging port installed onto battery cover!

Post by ScooterMan »

So, I just ordered one up from Amazon and it came in, and I took the liberty of installing it an hour ago. Hole was drilled with a 7/8" spade bit. Had to slice away some of the "grid" on the back to clear some room to be able to snug down the tightening nu on the back side. Here are some pics to encourage those who haven't yet done this. =) There is just enough room for the guts of the plug to fit inside the battery compartment. I have a Li Ion battery, which should be a little narrower (or not as tall laying down) so as to allow everything to fit. Anyway, works great. Only concern is that a tiny LED on the USB port is always on even with the key in the "off" position. But, typically these little LED's draw a fraction of a watt. If I didn't drive it for a month, it might be a problem, but a couple weeks should be fine. Of course if I let the bike sit for any period of time, I could remove the ring terminal from the neg side, or simply top off the charge on occassion.

Good thing about this mod (unlike the one that comes standard on the 2015) is that you can charge your phone or small laptop securely underneath the locked seat, and the key does NOT need to be in the ignition vs. leaving your phone in an unsecured glove box with the key in the ignition! That would be a little nerve racking if you were inside a restaurant. =)

Nice install. I just have the Tender plug wire coming out and the power adapter cord plugged into it.

It's GOOD! I want one even though I have one in the GBox. That's not a led light on it is it? Cause you know... it would stay on. Might take 20 years to drain the batt but still ;)

I didn't realize that there was enough room in that door to do that. Great install. Mine is above and to the left of my gas door. I had once put an extra battery under my seat to charge devices, but the long cable to where they were mounted on my bike caused me some headaches. However, for recharging while you are inside a restaurant that location would be ideal, especially if you had those items securely locked under the seat.
Currently own:
Red 2013 Honda PCX150

Givi tall windshield & tailbox - Lots of extra lights
Custom seat from Thailand - Bad Boy Airhorn
Takegawa Lowering Shocks - Michelin City Grip Tires
Headlight assy upgraded to LEDs w/HS5 main bulbs
NCY variator, drive face, and rollers

Its snug...not going to lie, but wasn't a strugge to fit either. If I had to guess, maybe 1n 1/8" clearance or so on each side with a bit more top to bottom on the back side of the accessory socket. Will take off the cover and measure the battery width later to give everyone an idea about whether it could still be done this way with an OEM battery.

Very clean looking I like this Idea. Mine is like SECoda. It gets in the way at times.
