Selling my bike - what do do about a couple of nasty scratch

Post by Fran »

Hi, I'm probably going to retire soon and I only use the bike for work. It's just under 2 years old, and fairly low milage (about 4,000 I think). It's got some fairly deep scratches on two panels. I don't think I'm up to replacing them. I'm wondering whether to pay a fortune for the dealer to do it, or buy some filler and paint and try to touch it up myself.

Would be glad of some opinions or advice. Also any other advice about selling it. I was thinking of getting it serviced.

Oh, also it's got a pretty cool windscreen on - but I read somewhere you should put the stock one back on. Again a dilemma.

Sorry to read that the two of you are "breaking up." :(
Personally, I would sell it "as is" with scratches.
Hmm, thinking...have you considered covering them with sticker's/decals? Would that hide them?
I wouldn't put any real money into fixing or replacing panels. If the bike is safe and sound, let her go. Adjust your price according to overall cond. Do an oil change perhaps(?) - inflate tires, and ck other to spec.
Leave the aftermarket screen on, and toss in your stock screen as part of the sale. It will help hide those scratches, (as a kind of trade-off) ;)

Important to Sell a Safe bike, and more important to advise if it's Not! My opinion. Good luck Fran!

If you have a pic of those scratches why not share them with members? It might help them guide you

Depending on the size and location of the scratches, you could put on some "Honda Wings" logo stickers or Prestige badges to cover them up?

Just leave it.
A couple of minor cosmetic blemishes won't affect the value much.

I guess it depends if you think the "scratches" are deep enough or large enough to devalue it. If not, leave it as is. Other than that, go for the new panels. If you have the ability to patch and paint it good enough so that it doesn't look a mess, I sure that you likely have the ability to replace the panels.

I would just factor it into the price rather than fanny around.

It's really hard to fix gashes in this type of plastic, replace the plastic part or leave it alone. If you want to color the gash so it's less apparent, google DR COLORCHIP.

The cost to repair will outstrip the amount you are going to get in return.

You are selling at the best time, people will be out looking as we approach summer. That will help the sale.

Just think of what you want to see when you go buy a bike. Make sure its properly cleaned and polish. Change the oil. If it looks clean and well looked after, that's the most important thing.

I have to replace every plastic piece on the right side of my PCX, and it's only going to cost €141 with my free labour...
So homie, you can feel safe buying my stuff, I don't try to conceal the tarmac pinstripes with roses or butterfly decals.

:D :D The Honda wings logo stickers only work once, mine got scratched on my second off. Decided to go either of two ways, don't replace them, or stop having offs.

On consideration, the second option may be the best.

Hi, thanks for all the replies, the scratches are not minor, but they could be worse. They look black, is that the colour the plastic is under a white surface? Anyway, seems the consensus is to sell as is. Maybe try painting them . It had a service done about 8 months ago and it does low miles so I guess I could leave that as well, but I might get that done as a compromise. I'll leave the screen on, it's tinted and looks good. I suppose I could get it checked, but if I get a dealer to service it that should be ok. I don't know how to do it myself.

The plastic is indeed black underneath the paint.
If it was serviced eight months ago and only has 4000 on the clock, definitely do not get it serviced again.
When you come to sell it you say it has had a recent service...
Eight months really isn't a long time ;)

Just sell it as is and point the new buyer to partzilla or somewhere to replace the messed up panels on their dime. So long add it is only cosmetic damage and the frame, engine, etc. are in perfect working order the pcx should hold its value.
