Sounds like everyone has different issues with weather. I recently been riding in temperatures below zero and it hasn't been as bad as I thought. That's interesting. I wouldn't have thought there would be much difference between a 500 and a 650 engine but I guess it's all about how it's built to perform.

It's a lovely bike though so I don't think MPG will matter too much when it comes to making a decision!
