I can see the nice little retaining plug with its locking button pushed nice and flush. From working on trim on the car, I know how these things work (or at least think I do). How do I get that plug out without trashing the retaining plug?

Thanks! Got it open and can now install battery charging wires that I am sure to need over the next few months. I would prefer to do the task when the weather is above freezing.

My experience with this sort of clip is that you push it to make it flush and the wings separate and retain the parts. A two-step clip is actually pretty clever. (It should be noted that I am easily entertained by this sort of thing.)

Curiously, I had to call up the page using Internet Explorer. Google's Chrome just gave me cryptic little symbol that was not of much use.

Push the center of the pin in (I'll call this the "center rod"). This will release the "wings" and let you pull out the pin.

To re-install, push the center rod back out so that it protrudes from the face. Re-install the clip, and push the center rod back to flush.

The two-step center rod lock is very clever. If you have your manual, look on page 57.

Thank you so much!!! While going through some threads I found some posts about the manual on sell.com. I found one for $30 and I ordered it tonight. Thank you also for posting the page number. I will try this tomorrow. I really didn't want to wait til the manual got here.

It is a fantastic piece of engineering

Word to the wise...be careful not to drop your battery terminal bolts/screws down into the guts of the bike when reinstalling the battery. My '13 has strategically placed holes that suck stray fasteners into the void. I fished it out from inside the panel in the bottom with a magnet on a long gooseneck. Stick a piece of paper/rag etc over the holes before you start!

I learned about that the hard way as well. Hubby keep dropping them into that little hole until I plugged the hole.
