I just don't trust my sandals (Or even my shoes!) that much.

I figured that using my spare tire would be safer and easier, and it was:
I loosened the nut using a strap & a crescent wrench. Then, using some wood from the scrap box I shimmed the clutch to the right height, leaned on the tire and safely and easily removed the nut. The weight kept the assembly compressed without me. (Handy if a Grizzly wanders by) Slowly lifted the wheel Reassembly worked fine in reverse. Yah!
