Oil Dipstick marking

Hey,

I think it must be me but where is the part on the Dipstick which it shouldn't go over?

I've never taken it out and not sure what was done on the last/first Service etc,
but lately the Bikes sounded like it's struggling to run as the speed increases,
got a new Air Filter in, and a new Spark Plug,
had to replace the Exhaust Cover as mine was cracked and as I was in that area I thought i'd check the Oil,
the Dipstick Cap wasn't screwed on that tight.....
but I took it out, wiped, back in, and out again,
and i've taken a photo,
stupid focus focused on the grown instead but you can still see the Oil mark on it,
but I didn't see any markings on the plastic to see the 'max' line.

That's over the max if you have followed the instructions. Get a syringe and take some out

The essential part of the instructions is that you need reinsert the cap-dipstick WITHOUT screwing it in. Thus, yours looks over full, but if you screwed it in, then it may not be over full. Do it again without screwing it in.

I screwed it in, I haven't touched the Oil at all since getting the Bike,
and I doubt they would of done anything with it on the first Service?
so i'm guessing it's the same oil etc from when the Bike was bought new
(June 2013)

Will do it now without screwing......
here are 2 photos I took,
took it out, wiped, put it back in without screwing, then back out,
seemed high so did it again, and cleaned any other Oil from around the Bike etc:

But again, I haven't touched the Oil,
and it's only had 1 Service done,
which was done late at around 1500 miles,
nothing else.

Oh, this was with the Bike cold as well,
went out earlier but it's cooled now,
shall I let it run for a bit and then do it?

Just ran it for a bit, then left it for 2 minutes,
took it out, wiped, back in, out... and still seems too much

but again, i'm pretty sure this hasn't been touched since purchasing the Bike,
as a first service wouldn't need a oil change etc...
it's done just over 4000 miles now,
1500 of them done in the past 2 months,
Air Filter changed and Spark Plug, but still something doesn't seem right,
isn't as smooth riding as when I got it,
seems like it's struggling a bit...
also when riding, and picking up speed, when it gets to a certain speed the Bike sounds weird and then settles,
not sure if this is normal or not.

I might just drain it all actually and put some fresh Oil in....
how much exactly needs to go in?
and any suggestions on a good Oil to use?

Did you have the bike on the center stand or the side stand. It needs to be upright and not leaning. If it was upright, then it looks too full and you should take some out.

Yep center stand on a flat ground....
what will actually happen with there being too much in there?
as i've had the Bike for about 2 months now running on whatever amount of Oil is in there.

I bought my pcx150 the end of June and a week later I checked the oil... It looked like the pictures on this thread, being over filled and I could smell gasoline in it as well. I had it on the center stand when I checked.

I brought it to the dealership and told them it was over filled and smelled gasoline in it. The mechanic at Honda leaves it on it's side stand and checks and said the oil is fine and no smell of gasoline. I had the first service done this week and will check the oil today because I am driving it south to Branson, MO, about 45 miles on the scenic Ozarks country roads/state highway.

Instruction #2 above says to put it on the center stand and on level ground, so I'm not sure what memo your dealer got that wasn't in the manual.

If this has been at this level for 2 months+ now, what could the causes be if kept like it?

Also can someone point me in the direction of a good Oil to use,
and the amount that needs to go in there once I drain it.

.8 Liter or 8/10 of a Quart. Some folks here don't care and just put a whole quart in which looks to be what happened to yours last time it was serviced.

For the last few oil changes I have been using * Shell Rotella T6 synthetic and Redline synthetic. Any major brand quality oil will do since there is no wet clutch, you do Not need to use special motorcycle oil.

jojo - you mention 'as a first service wouldn't need a oil change etc...' - actually it seems an oil change at 600 miles is important and is really one of the few things done on most 1st PCX dealer services - I doubt most actually inspect/adjust the valves on most of the services they do on the life of PCX's (perhaps on 2500 or so if they can be bothered). People report bits of metal in the oil 'catcher' as the engine beds in, rather than the oil being old and worn out.

If it missed the 1st service, or had it done at 1500, the dealer should have changed the oil esp. as it may have been it's 1st oil change.

Is it a PCX? I know folks with a Forza say they don't have to do anything till 4,000 miles, but on a PCX the servicing interval is a lot shorter. The oil on that dip stick looks like it needs changing anyway. I use a full synthetic and it is a lot cleaner looking after 1500 miles than that on your dipstick....in fact, it looked cleaner after 2500 miles. The first 1500 miles on these scooters is critical for oil changes.

Agree with Mel, oil looks in need of changing anyway. Particles of crap (as I call it) could be afloat. Just drain it all out. You can then Follow the "How To" change oil....found here: http://www.hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25

Remember, Checking oil: "Cold" scoot on "level" ground, on "center stand."

I will be checking mine today, thanks for this conversation. Who knows what's in my 2015? I will know shortly

Btw jojo87, did you get an owners manual with your scoot?

That oil will be fine. It's what I use. There is only an wire mesh oil screen and not a filter as such so a blast out with wd40 will sort it.

1 litre will be fine. It only takes 800ml (0.8 litre).

Wicked thanks, went to Halford and got a Bottle, and WD40,
drained the Oil earlier today,
so will see what's remaining as had to put the screw back in while I went out,
so will take the Filter out, give it a blast and clean,
then put the fresh Oil in and give it a run.
