HondaPCX150 2015 Model at higher speeds?

Post by alesiajade »

Hi Guys!

Just wondering how well the 2015 model pcx150 does at high speeds (Approx 90kph+)? Does it stay fairly solid or does it blow around a little? I'm new to all this and don't plan on going that fast for a while, but it will happen at some point and I want to make sure the pcx150 is the right one for me.

Thanks!

Any "blowing around" you encounter is typically unfamiliarity with handling head/side winds. Unless we're talking tropical storm or hurricanes, I haven't had much trouble with wind.

90 kph is fine, you'll probably hit the rev limiter at about 102 kph. If we're talking about freeway travel, you may run into problems with the stock variator. The acceleration is a little slow IMO when attempting to merge, so you might invite a bit of honking when doing that.

The first time I took my PCX up to 100kph was in a strong cross wind, once I got over my nerves there wasn't a problem. I frequently take the scoot up our local freeway for roughly 15km and it happily sits on the speed limit 100kph. The rev limiter cuts in at around 108kph according to the speedo.

As a matter of interest did you pick the PCX up, or have it delivered?

Not sure what you mean by this, as far as I know the Australian model doesn't have a limiter? (Not familiar with that sort of thing so correct me if I interpreted it the wrong way). Was told by the dealer it will go up to about 120 okay, and can be pushed to 130.

I haven't gotten it yet, and also haven't decided, won't be for a couple of weeks :)

Unless the australian model has drastic changes compared to the US model, those figures are ridiculously optimistic if not outright impossible on a stock model.

The rev limiter keeps engine rpms from rising above a certain amount. For US models it's at 9600 rpms typically. Unless the Australian models had a serious upgrade in some manner, it should have the same rev limit in order to ensure longevity of the engine. With a stock variator at 9600 rpms, the speeds are 67 mph(108 kph) for the 2013 model, and 64 mph(103 kph) for the newer LED models. The new model is slower because it's geared shorter, so it'll be slower at the same rpms.

120 kph is about 74.5 mph. That's an optimistic speed under ideal conditions on the longer geared 2013 model, on top of an aftermarket variator in order to extend the gearing further. 130 kph is about 80.7 mph, and that's a speed I can only reach with a Big Bore Kit(175cc, will void your warranty), a performance camshaft, an aftermarket exhaust, an aftermarket air filter, an aftermarket variator, an aftermarket gear set(to raise top speed further), an aftermarket wind screen, and I have to be going downhill with plenty of empty space in front of me to accelerate.

Here's an example of that:

26:20 would be where I get up to about 80 mph(130 kph).

Same run, but this was stock(before any mods):

Skip ahead to 37:30 to get to roughly the same start point.

I'm not trying to discourage the purchase, but you should have a realistic idea of what precisely it is you're buying. This is not a 250cc Kawasaki Ninja, it's a 153cc maxi-scooter.

Valient, thank you so much for that information! Very helpful.

I think the dealer was either pulling my leg or just didn't really know the model he was talking about (this was an over the phone conversation rather than in person so..). The speed thing isn't much of an issue. I would like to take it on the highways here but not often enough for it to be a worry.

Thanks guys :)

As to 'blown around' - strong winds in the UK at present and it's the only time I really feel unsafe on the PCX - this is commuting across town at 20-30! (I was being blown a bit sideways for much of my 10 mile commute). My workmate rides a 125 motorcycle and he too hates it when it's windy.

I've had my PCX up to 100 k/ph once - on a level stretch of road - slight side winds - and it did okay. As my PCX is new, I throttled down almost immediately. I did want to see if it could go that fast. As for the winds, I haven't had any real problems yet, but then again, there aren't a lot of wide open places in Bangkok.

Believe me alesiajade top speed is around 110kph on the Oz model. You may get an extra 2 or 3kph if you are a slim type, but that's about it.

Sales people are just that, sales people, and most have more enthusiasm than knowledge :D :D

Higher speeds than what? Bicycle, moped, ox and cart?

It's definitely got pedestrians covered

I've had mine up to 73 mph, ( variator filed and dr pulley mod ) a couple of times now due to tailwind assistance and its perfectly stable, as good as any of the smaller motorcycles I've owned.
