Riding in the dark

Post by honkerman »

Personally, I love a good night ride, especially right after dusk when it's dark but the glow of the sun can still be seen on the horizon. As is my habit, I blogged about it if anyone cares to read it.

My question is, who else likes to ride at night and what do you most enjoy about it?

I like to ride anytime the roads are empty.
Four decades on two wheels has taught me nothing, all advice given is guaranteed to be wrong

As GN2 says, it's not night or rain just the a******s on the roads. Coming in 10.30pm yesterday evening I met with so many t***s, two of which were bus drivers - one stopped in the offside lane to let people on when the bus stop and nearside lane was empty for 100 yards!, the other crossed lanes in front of me and then swapped lanes on a roundabout in front of other traffic, and then I had a white van indicate to turn right, start turning and with the indicator on changed their minds and pulled into my lane as they wanted the next turning and there was a parked vehicle in their lane (hooting just got me evil looks from the a*****s in the van).
No government will do anything as they want voters, but it's got so bad in London they should put 100's of unmarked vehicles on the roads with camera's and give very heavy fines and bans and crush the vehicles or sell them - it would pay for itself so no added cost to the taxpayer and over time change how people drive. Otherwise it will only get worse and 2 wheeled riders in the most danger.

I hear ya Iceman. I live in a more rural area, but when I go into the city or even on some of the suburban roads, things change dramatically. There's one road on the edge of suburbia (and by edge, I mean houses on one side and corn fields on the other), that I use several times a week. This three mile stretch of roach bends and twists in a few places and has three well used roads that intersect it. Two of these are moderated by stop signs, and just last week I had three people pull out in front of me without looking left. Thankfully I was going slow enough to stop, but I gave the one guy a good tongue lashing (he had his window down). Closest I ever got to jumping off the scoot and ramming my helmet into the side of the offending driver's vehicle...yeah, that would have been dumb, but I was furious, and that would have looked funny with my "Rowlf the dog" helmet cover. Anyway, I have a close call on that road at least once a week and it's always at one of those two intersections, I'd avoid it if I could but the other option is to take the highway, and that's worse. Some people just should not be allowed to drive.
