The steering head nut holds the steering stem in place. Without it, things would be terribly wobbly.

They call it a steering stem lock nut in the manual. Same difference.

If one looks immediately to the right of the "44N-m(4.5kgf-m, 33lb-ft)" one will see what looks sort of like a Y shaped doohickey, into which the bolts on the curved thingamajigs run through where those little cap-cover gimcracks (the ones I was supposed to remove with duct tape or have fly all across the garage) cover.

I don't really see that there's any kind of nut there, and it almost seems to suggest to me that the inside of the doohickey is threaded to receive the bolt from above.

The nuts to which you refer, Paul, appear to be holding those doohickeys to some other whatchamacallit, where the bolts on the Y shaped doohickey go through and are held on by nuts from below. These weren't the ones to which I originally referred.

Wrong nut. But neither of those are the steering head/stem nut. That's in the picture but not labeled. The nut I was mistakenly referring to holds the handlebar assembly to the steering stem.

The first pic shows the locknut on the steering stem. It's badly drawn, but the other post I made about it shows how the spanner fits on it.

My favorite far side is attached as well.

The upshot of it all seems to me that we're talking about two entirely different things.

The question I still have, is about those four bolts (the ones with the heads under those cap thingies). Do they, or do they not have any nuts under the bottom, or is my viewing of the service manual correct in that the thing they fit into is threaded?

Most importantly of all, what is the exact tool used to loosen those bolts, so that I can rotate the handlebars back a little?

My new windscreen is here, and I'd sort of like to do something with it, other than keep looking at the box.

Ish, you've been confusing me as well. Let's stay on topic, or at least one at a time. Agreed? Cool.

Alright then, below are the tools I found easiest to use. A ratchet and 6mm hex head drive.
Note: be aware of torque power. Do Not over tighten those 4 bolts when you turn them back in.

And answer to your question: No nuts are "under the bottom" of those four bolts. Receiving end is threaded only.

*When you're finally comfortable with your bars position, take those 4 bolts back out and dribble some Loctite Threadlocker "Blue 242" on the threads and put them back in.

White Noise: Yeah, I've fallen victim to that "I want to do everything right now" syndrome. Back in the heady days of the Apollo program, they called it "Go Fever" So, in order not to screw something up, it's time to take a step back, a deep breath, and focus on the one thing at a time.

Compounding the issue is a rather significant injury I suffered yesterday. While repairing a damaged shingle on the roof of my garage apartment, I noticed some bamboo on a neighbor's property that is overhanging the roof. The tenant asked me to fix all of this, so I called up the neighbor and asked if I could trim it, and getting the okay, I started cutting some of it back. Up to this point I'd had on heavy leather work gloves for the whole job. Getting back up on the roof after a short break (my wife makes great iced tea!) I found one more bamboo that needed to be trimmed. So I grabbed up the saw and started to cut the thing. It gave way, came back and sliced my left index finger open, exposing the second knuckle. I had neglected to put my gloves back on yet. 16 stitches later, I can't bend my left index finger, and it's going to take several weeks to get a good heal on. So, I can't do much of anything for a while now. All because I got in a hurry. I can't even get my riding gloves on, so there won't be any riding any time soon either.

So, I have this period of time where I won't be able to do anything. Frustrating.

Geez Ish, bad times. Well all I can say now, is to get all your ducks in a row (supplies, tools, knowledge, patience, etc) collected and sorted so you'll be set to Go when life treats you better (or is that visa versa?)

Heal first

Well, everything seems to happen for a reason, and I'm taking it as a message to slow down a bit, and not try to do everything at once.

Frustration is the word, as my LED strips just arrived from Oznium, and I have the heat gun from ebay, along with the shrink tubing from heatshrink.com so my tail light add-on is also going to be staring me in the face for a while longer now.

I can hear all these things calling to me.

On the bright side, I think I've narrowed down where my torque wrench is, so it's a matter of just finding it, so then the only thing I'll need is a set of those hex-head sockets, and then I'll have everything lined up and... calling my name. "Install me... Install me..."

Holy ouch Batman! That does not sound like fun.

Also, sorry for the confusion about the nut "underneath" the handlebars. Since there is no nut that the clamp bolts connect to I thought you were asking about the steering head nut. The question wasn't making sense in the context you were asking it. Now, had you been standing next to me and pointing at what you were asking, that would have made things much clearer.

Unfortunately, that's not terribly feasible. Ah well.

Went to the doctor today for the checkup, and she says I'm recovering well. It will be two or three days before the swelling goes down enough for me to bother with any sort of tool, but I do have the permission of that lovely little lady I married to fiddle with Natasha this weekend, if my finger "feels up to it" For the interim, just call me Frodo.
