Headlight failure

Riding home from work and noticed both headlights were out, it was getting dark but was able to check the obvious, the fuses are all fine. The battery starts bike ok no problem just the headlamps. Got home and had time to switch with spare headlight bulbs, also to no avail ..Too dark now to strip stuff down and use a meter... Has anyone had this happen to them? Haven't checked beneath the screen in the headlight area yet, is there even a headlight relay? Theres a small red electrical compenent under the battery negative, anyone know what it is? ..Well tomorrow looks to be interesting NOT.
In the meantime any idea's welcomed.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the red diagnostic port. After having seen the connector for this (just a loop-back cable for two of the four pins), I'm pretty sure you could jump this with an insulated paperclip.
The idea is it flashes something on the dashboard and you count the number and duration of the flashes and reference that against the diagnostic table in the service manual.
Someone on here with a service manual might be able to help you with the error codes once you attain them.
As for bridging the the diagnostic port with a paperclip, I'll try and find you a picture of the loopback cable to confirm. Once you've hooked it up, I think you just switch on the ignition without starting the bike?

EDIT: Here is a pic of the loopback cable courtesy of Honky. You should be able to discern the orientation of the pins from the image so that you know which ones to bridge.

Thanks Gav, that's it..wondered what that red thingy was. Now it has nothing to do with the headlights I'll move on, until I get a meter on things I'm in the dark, can't find anything about a headlight relay anywhere? Problem with this is there's so many different things it could be, I was secretly hoping someone would have heard of a similar occurence and save me a bunch of time. Tomorrow will be interesting NOT.

Not so quick Sanjo! I didn't go through all that waffle just in passing.
It is my hope that you can reveal an error code via the diagnostic port to help isolate the issue with your headlights.

I guessed that's where you were going lol. It sounds a bit risky without the right tool, and I cant ride without headlights even in daytime courtesy of the fuzz to get it to the dealer, A truck I dont have, looks like a tedious day doing it the old school way removing screws, housings, panels and a multimeter

I would first look at the the headlight switch. Check for power at the switch then jump it and go from there.

... and that, my friends, is why I added lights that do NOT directly into the rest of the lights. If you blow a fuse or have another problem like you have, you can not ride. With my setup you can flick on the switch on the handlebars, or the one on the center panel, and you can come time ue riding. Brake lights are a different thing though. See if your brake lights come on.

Are both your high beams and low beams Out? There are 2 common things for those, the switch, and the ground. The 15 amp fuse 'D' is for the headlights. It looks like it is part of the ground for it. I can attach a copy of the wiring diagram if you want it, assuming yours is still a 2013 or older.

Hey thanks for the input PCX friends, we have a good bunch of pals here that's for sure.. The problem was the High/low beam switch, just jumped across it until I can get a new one. Thanks for the suggestions, they may be of some use to anyone else who suffers the same problem.
