If you want to do much talking you will need to use the local repeaters. Here is a list of them in case you don't have a directory at home. http://www.myhamcallsign.com/repeaters.php

I'm not a HAM expert, but a close friend has a UV5R and loves it.

He says the new GT-3 is better, same brand. You might look into that one too.

I have the yaesu ft-60r. Great little handheld. Only a little more than the wouxon
