So, after the mechanic reset the ECU, it's got worse? Now won't start?Mgalutia88 wrote:So at this point my bike no longer starts... It turns over but doesn't start. The dealer is sending an ecu snapshot to honda at their request. I'm ready to be riding again

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
I was at the dealer today and they still haven't tried resetting the ecu or sent a snapshot to Honda. This is getting rediculous. They did get it in after I was there today and I have not heard any news yet. Personally I think either the crank position sensor died or the ecu. It would run up to high speed on the stand under no load but wouldn't go over 47mph while being ridden. This makes me think about ignition advance. I will call and talk to the mechanic tomorrow and try to convince him to test the crank sensor. I'll update when there is real news.

Rediculous that in many reported cases, it takes ages to get a dealer/Honda agreed repair or the bike back on the road. A week, ok, months, not on.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
If its running up to full rpm on the stand I doubt its electronics, sounds more like mechanical problems to me.Mgalutia88 wrote:I was at the dealer today and they still haven't tried resetting the ecu or sent a snapshot to Honda. Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
It might be something braking down under load. If the bike is revved on the stand there is little or no real load on the engine, but when riding it the weight of the bike/rider and wind resistance may cause the fault. Has the fuel pressure and flow been checked? Is the injector spray pattern ok? Has the coil and Ht lead been checked. A decent garage should have a KV pickup for an occilloscope to check the ignition pattern. Has a compression test been done?
Sometimes it takes a step back and to check the basics first.

Beyond all of that I found out today that it's doing something else REALLY weird. The starter will run for two or three seconds then shut off for a second.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
The dealer updated their scanner so that they could take a computer snap shot of the starter acting up, almost like a video except through the ecu. I'm hoping that this will finally enable them to diagnose a bad ecu? and I'll get my bike back soon! ... Hopefully lol
Also, there is spark and fuel, the bike tries to start and then immediately dies, even when given throttle. The starter runs constant when hooked directly to 12 volts too. I'm supposed to hear back in the next day or two. WE SHALL SEE!!!
In the mean time I'm drooling over the CBR 300 R coming out either the end of this year or beginning of next year. I'm planning on buying one for myself as a college graduation gift as soon as I'm placed in a job. That will be around this time next year.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
I wonder if a wire to the ECU is shorted intermittently or something strange like that. It sounds like an ECU issue to me.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
Maddie, I've been thinking ecu issue from the start but it's STILL at the dealer. I have a four year extended warranty but I'm not even at the end I my first year yet. I've been without the scooter for six weeks now at a cost o about $60 a week in higher fuel cost. I've been driving the old Porsche 944 in the mean time and enjoying being able to slide around corners by feathering the throttle. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the car again. I've found I have an itch for a malossi multivar also so there may be one in the nearer future.
Right now I need to get back to sleep but I will post again when I have a real update.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
Spoke with dealer yesterday. The new Brisk Racing spark plug that I had installed the day after it didn't want to start was completely burnt up. That plug had less than 100 miles on it. When it first got to the dealer they checked it and it was ok. I'm starting to wonder if the whole 47mph issue was the plug. If it was misfiring under load then the knock sensor would have kicked in and caused it to shut down to around 25mph like it did. It still doesn't explain the weird starter bahavior and the starting issue that I had. Hopefully I will get more news today. The dealer is crying out of frustration over this whole thing. I'm friends with the service manager (he has a 49cc elite that does 60mph) so I've been as nice as I can. It is the beginning of the riding season here and their busiest time of year.

This is why I prefer leaving things standard.

The factory usually knows a thing or two - that goes for most manufacturers - cars and bikes.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
I will agree that the factory plug is best in this case. At the same time, the PCX responds extremely well to transmission modifications and exhaust and intake mods make it more easily able to sustain the higher speeds going up hills. Between my large K&N pod filter and my takegawa exhaust I have gained 10mph in uphill speed from 60mph at wot to holding 70mph at 2/3 throttle on the same hill. I'm serious guys.
Save the oil for spark plugs and ignition mods.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
So I got my bike back on Saturday morning. The spark plug was the entire issue. Serves me right I guess. At the same time I have been getting things done in the mean time that I had been putting off so I'm not going to complain... Just ride
Oh and the two months at the dealer were covered without a penny out of my pocket to them.

Re: Shut down while riding now won't accelerate.
Damn spark plug! crazy!!! good thing you got your wheels back! and yes intake, exhaust and variator is the way to go.

I'm thinking takegawa 170cc big bore kit is next. It's 16hp on the 150 esp model. I think that will suffice.

Have you thought about a racing spark plug?
