Different manuals exist for different markets.
This is why it is essential to use the fuel listed in the manual which was supplied with the scooter.
True but I have seen manuals for the USA only list RON and others show both but not really explain the difference.
I looked but could not find a copy of the USA manual but I found others and they list 91 RON which would be REGULAR.

Oh yes, muchly.
They may be confused by "petrol" and "ride" could go either way.

Your right.
Use "gas" (North America only)
And ride (in a non sexual connotation way)
Things get so complicated so quickly....

You're right there, that's what it tastes like in the States, unless things have changed recently :-)

In Canada the manual book recommends unleaded fuel only, recommended fuel octane number: your scooter is designed to use Pump Octane Number (PON) 86 or higher. Or at other page recommends Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) up to 10% by volume. Or Methanol (methyl alcohol) up to 5% by volume that contains cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors to protect the fuel system. Never use a blend containing more than 5%...IT's confusing a bit hey!? Then just go and look for this kind of fuel as recommended.

Is North American octane rating different? In my part of Australia we have RON of 91, 95 and 98. We did have 100 for a time.
If you put the equivalent of 87RON in your car you'd be pinging all the way home... I've only had bad fuel once, not a nice sound.
We do or used to have ethanol (E10), which was slightly cheaper but have much worse economy and performance.
In the scooter and VZ-R I use 98. The VZ-R likes some Japanese unobtanium 104RON aviation fuel, so I never get full power.
In the Jeep I just use regular 91RON, but you can feel a bit more power from 98.

Sounds like you somehow got a manual from a different country instead of the U.S. Manual. The US manual states 87 octane. As others here have mentioned, different countries use different octane rating systems. Fill your tank with regular and save yourself 50 cents a gallon.

I only run premium fuel now.
I switched a bit in the begining, but the 98 octane just seems to make the engine run a bit smoother, a bit longer pr. kilometer and the throttle seems more instant when you twist it.
Maybe it's just me, but I like it :-)

Since the engine in PCX doesn't have knock sensor, it's safe bet the premium doesn't bring any benefits to fuel economy or power. The smoother sound associated with use of premium(aka 'super' or 'ultra') fuel is due to less peak cylinder pressure generated due to higher octane properties and no spark advance to go with it.

Anyone tried diesel yet?
I hear it gives great economy and lots of torque.

I was told by the dealer to go with 98 octane as well. I feel sorry for you, since you cant feel the difference.

It seems the dealer needs to advise Honda what fuel their scooters need seeing that Honda doesn't seem to know. Really, use higher octane fuel if it makes you happy, otherwise use what the manufacturer specifies and what 10'000's of users probably use.
I've been using the cheapest 97 Ron since I purchased the pcx May '14 and it runs very, very well giving very high mpg too. Starts 1st time, purrs and only ever had the oil changed so far.
