We're being shafted over here by the banks too. We're lending to them at 1/2% and there lending it back to us at 25%. People here are more sheep like and take it "for their own good". Have you ever watched "V for Vendatta" ;)

Good tip on the movies, Ill order them now. Tbh the slang isn't too bad as we can understand what is happening in context. I have seen "tambien la lluvia" which you think I would have avoided

That was pretty forward thinking of your parents. Did they do that so you could work abroad etc,

I know but Green Spain is stunning and San Sebastion is stunning. We met the nicest people we have ever met in our lives there. They were running a truckers diner at the edge of an industrial estate. We learned a lot from them in the couple of hours we were there.

Anyway it woulnt have rain like this. Took this at lunchtime from our back door

About the movies, just for you to know, "Celda 211" is about a prison in which hell breaks loose, and "No habrá paz para los malvados" is about a corrupt cop, but I liked them both, particularly "Celda 211". Didn't watch those you mention but heard about them. I'll check if they're available for rent.

My parents just thought we had to learn English (at least), since it was clear to them that you'd go nowhere in life unless you had a decent command of it. The English level you got at school/high school, back then, was mediocre, so a private teacher was the way to go.

It definitely doesn't rain that much here. Don't know if it's your porch or a pier! :D .

BTW, clashes in Madrid between demonstrators and riot police. As expected.

My favourites so far are

El perro
Machuca
Night of the sunflowers
Motorcycle diaries
Sin nombre

I'll check out Celda 211 and No habrá paz para los malvados. No peace for the wicked?

Haven't seen those but will check on them. And yes, that translation is correct.

More suggestions:

- Belle Epoque (Fernando Fernán-Gómez at his best. One of my favourite actors, and Maribel Verdú is just stunning).
- Amantes
- El Abuelo (Fernán-Gómez again).
- Abre los ojos (Amenábar).
- Tesis (Amenábar again. His "opera prima". Thriller. A hard one, but I loved it).
- El laberinto del fauno.
- La caja 507.
- La escopeta nacional.
- La vaquilla.

I strongly recommend all of them, but especially the last two. They're not new, both were filmed a few years ago. Both contain a good dose of stereotypes magnificently blended with a sharp criticism of the old-fashioned Spanish society. Perfect for someone with a British sense of humour and interested in our culture ;) . I suggest you turn the subtitles on since they're quite slangy, and in "La escopeta nacional" two of the characters are Catalan and sometimes they'll speak in that language.

Only one I've seen is El laberinto del fauno. Pans labyrinth over here. It's popular over here dubbed.

Cheers I'll check them out

I thought you would have seen most of my favourites tbh. I guess you'd probably like sin nombre best from the others you have suggested. I like El perro as I'm a bit soft about dogs. Yes I've seen Amores perros :D

Just watched El piel que hábito. That was a touch wierd o_O

Missed something sorry

Is La vaquilla insulting? It would be over here if you were talking about a female

Forget that. I've just googled the movie. It is about a heifer

I didn't watch them but some sounded familiar. Most of Almodóvar stuff is... weird to say the least. Watch "Todo sobre mi madre", and report back with your impressions  . Or "La mala educación"... I watched it in Sydney in an open air cinema in front of the Opera House. The environment was impressive, not that much the movie. I had an Aussie girlfriend (who spoke perfect Spanish with an Argentine accent, funny) at the time and she insisted in watching "that". Revolting :? .

No, it's not. At least not in this context. Calling "vaca" (cow) to a female is definitely not nice :D , and "vaquilla" is how the females of the fighting bulls (those black and badly tempered ones) are called when they're still growing up. Would-be bullfighters start their early training with those "vaquillas". The action occurs during the Spanish civil war, and a "vaquilla" plays an interesting role in the movie.

BTW, I'm one of those who dislikes bullfighting.

Heifer would be more of a woman who was ungainly and foul mannered over here rather than a cow but I was on the wrong track

Saw La mala educación with my wife as she fancies Gael Garcia Bernal. Haha. Big mistake, I thought she was going to be physically ill

Here's one for you if you like the interplay of the English language and what is said and isn't said. Have you seen Kind hearts and coronets?

Nope. I'm already having a look at the Wikipedia article about it. It does look good. I'm afraid it's gonna be kind of difficult to rent it over here :( .
