Yes the picture is good.
A problem I get is a build up of corrosion between the caliper body and the stainless clip the pad sits in.

Really Awful Brakes
Looks pretty mucky. If the pads are tight in the caliper there not going to last long right enough.

Yes, I just saw it this morning, Dave. Thanks for posting that. That's a good shot of what's wrong with the design. It needs more relief and obviously can't stand much mud or corrosion buildup, for one thing.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
Does anyone know if the knife edge in my photo is an essential part of the brake design or can I just grind it off?
If I grind a few thousandths off of the brake pad steel will it improve the clearance and life of the pad.?
What lubrication should be used on the edge of the pad? It gets so hot I would think that any grease would just melt and drip off.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
Proper brake paste can be got from a decent motor/ Auto spares supplier.
The general consensus is not to use copper grease now but use non conductive paste. I use this.....

Only because I get it from my work.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
I have something similar and it claims to be able to take heat but I have my doubts on the Forza. The brake caliber is too close to the catalytic converter. I do not think the shielding is doing an adequate job. My wheel is always very warm and so is the tire. The scooter setup is more exposed to mud than a car tire & brakes.Alibally wrote:Proper brake paste can be got from a decent motor/ Auto spares supplier.

I am going to take a few sharp edges off of my next set of pads and give them a few thousandth more clearance. I might get the new pads tomorrow depending on shipping.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
I don't own a Forza but am prospecting for one. So I don't know to what extent this brake problem is due to poor design and/or how much to some problem specific to your particular bike--but supposing it is poor design, it is my experience that there is always some way to wiggle or jiggle, cut or file something that will greatly mitigate the issue and very often solve it altogether. I think you are on the right track, taking it apart and getting down and dirty with it.
The Burgman is a nice machine from a non-owners point of view, but it probably has its sticky places too. All bikes do.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
I picked up some EBC organic rear brake pads today for the Forza, they had to come from Calgary over the weekend. The edges of the pads where they will go into the stainless steel sliders are quite rough. The paint is in blobs and the steel has sharp edges. I will take my dremel grinder to them and smooth everything out. A bit of brake grease to put on them and put it all back together finally. I have a new stainless steel muffler clamp.

Re: Really Awful Brakes
Rear brakes are installed. I took a file to get rid of the sharp edges. The rear wheel is hot. The 3 month count down starts now.
