Cleaning the screen only takes a few minutes. While the oil is draining why not remove the 17 mm bolt and rinse out the screen of any particulates. Easy !!

DO NOT use an adjustable wrench on that screen cap. Use a socket. It may give some resistance the first time you change the oil so don't be surprised if it may be a tad tough to twist off. To get better access to it remove the brake cable bolt. Be sure not to over tighten the brake cable bolt or oil strainer screen cap on reassembly. :geek:

Some of the oil will reside in the engine cavities so you won't get out an exact amount out that you are recommended to replace. Add half a quart first once everything is button backed up and then go slowly and check the dip stick several times as the level rises so you don't overfill it. After a disassembly or removal of the oil strainer screen it is stated in the SM that 1 U.S. quart should be replaced but that may be too much. Figure it will be closer to 0.8 U.S. quarts on the refill. . .hence the fill slowly and check dip stick several times in the process routine. I use the Pro Honda HP4M 4-stroke oil (10w-40 in my case but 10w-30 is recommended). ;)

Don't be surprised if you find some contaminants in the screen. . .like lint for example. No big deal. . .others have found it as well. . .just clean it out and replace the screen. 8)

I wish I would have read this sooner. I did indeed put the whole quart in and then discovered it was way too much. So ended up having to drain some out. oh well, lesson learned.

Can we talk about the odd placement of the drain bolt? What do others use as a drain pan? I had on old plastic dish pan I always used on my other scooter. For the pcx it barely catches the oil and yes I had oil everywhere when I was done. Thankfully, I only have to do that once a year!

I did read about changing the oil before I did the deed, and was warned about the mess. I put a bit of aluminum tape on the motor to help direct the oil away from the kickstand and toward my collection dish. It worked OK, and is still stuck on a couple years later.

On my scoot, getting there is WAY more than half the fun!
