A quick update and further info that might help others in a similar situation.
My WD40 ‘fix’ proved to be of limited use since soon afterwards my left indicator eventually only worked on rare occasions, if at all. I did figure out how to remove the indicator unit, though, by levering out the indicator unit from the rest of the handlebar assembly. As you can see from the images, there are a couple of spring loaded plastic bits left and right that are easily freed with a small screwdriver, allowing the whole thing to be removed.
To start with, remove the two screws binding the assembly to the handlebar. Disconnect the red plug unit, then ease out the indicator unit from the front.
Replacement part number is SWITCH UNIT, TURN SIGNAL 35200-KYZ-901.

I did wonder how long that part would last as it always seemed fragile at best, but your may be one of the few cases it actually failed.
