How Cold Will You Go?

Winter is approaching again. Snow this weekend maybe.

So what is your personal temperature limit?

I sort of treat 5 degrees celsius as the stay home limit. But 5 at home means below zero in the mountains.

I sometimes wear 3 pair of long underwear, my rain pants & my mesh armour pants.

One problem is my riding boots are not super warm. I think I have a bit of frostbite in my feet.

I have Goretex snow gloves but I still get cold hands.

Sometimes the scooter should just stay in the shed.

45F or 7.22C is the lowest I will ride in. Being dressed up like an Eskimo takes too long.

Don't decide based on temperature, I decide based on road conditions.
In winter during freezing conditions, if the roads are dry and there is no precipitation imminent, so no ice risk, I will ride no matter what the temperature is.

21 things to put on and some have to come down to go to the bathroom because I can't find it.

7.22C is a mild spring day here, average temperatures are round about that or less for half the year.
I don't put my thermal liners in till its averaging 4C.

I do the same. My commute is 12 km each direction. I have my Termoscud PRO, Termogloves.

I always say I'll ride if it's going to be 40°F or higher on the way home from work, which is usually between 10PM and midnight. The Forza has pretty good wind protection, so it should do well on short trips like my commute, which is about 10 miles. I wouldn't want to do anything much longer in those temps. A few years back, when I had my TU250x, it was supposed to be about 40°F on the way home, so I took the TUX. Unfortunately, they were off by about 10°F, so it was 30°F as I rode past the bank in town. I had on my leather jacket, so my torso was pretty good, but my hands and legs were freezing as the TUX offered little wind protection.

That is the truth.

You wouldn’t have a car without heating..

Lots of new snow on the mountains near me. Time to stay low for a while.

I went to the beach today. The volcano is going to blow.

In the original Mini, a heater was an optional extra.

I know someone who uses those hunting heat packs to keep his feet warm in the winter while riding. I know someone else who has socks that use a 9 volt battery. I wonder how long the battery lasts. Hmmm.

In any case, those guys like to hunt so I am guessing that they have all sorts of cold weather gear.

For me, riding is strictly for fun unless I have to take the bike to some place because my wife is using the car. It has no problem keeping with traffic, so even going to a doctor appointment is no problem. I offered to take our dog to the vet on the PCX but my wife was worried about the dog. Hmmm...I know that I can put the pet carrier on the tailbox rack, so what's the problem?

Ditto.
I look at the air temperature and dew point. If those two suggest the presence of frost, then the commute will be via transit. The other thing, of course, is the forecast -- any chance of snow, and the bike stays in the garage.

I'll never forget the time two years ago, when the forecast said "rain, changing to mixed rain and snow in the evening", so I figured the afternoon commute home would be fine. But the cold front arrived sooner than expected, and I had to leave work early, and ride home on slippery roads at 20km/hr, white-knuckling the whole way.

This is a picture of me taking a picture of the USA Border Spy Camera taking a picture of me.

The RCMP showed up a few minutes later but I used the Force on the force. These are not the drones you are looking for. They drove right past me.

I agree...road conditions (even those you can't see sometimes) are more important than temp. Hubby just went down after hitting some "black ice" on a 30-34 degree day. Thankfully he was going slow and had all the gear on. Still, he ended up with a broken wrist, bruised other hand on top and bone chips in the ankle (his fam does have a bit of history of osteopenia). He couldn't figure out how in the world the scoot slid out from under him, until a number of people said there was black ice present that day. The scoot sustained $1000 in damage but thankfully we have a no-deductible policy and Nationwide was happy to cover it all.

I suppose me too.

Some 25 years ago in a James bond movie some ''baddies'' were chasing him down the mountain in mountain bikes, ALL STUDDED. They were pretty good in the movie. These are not popular but I bet they could be custom manufactured. Studs help to offset ''black ice''.

My worst experiences have been sudden braking after a rain that lifted oil to the surface of a road, sand, and wet grass. Any of that is aggravated by a lack of tread.

It was at first, along with a wet floor as the floor plan was lapped the wrong way around...
