Came across this sign, this morning. Strange number for a speed limit!

is that a photoshop or similar? I'm wondering since it looks like the sign has a border in color - I can't say what since I'm color blind. I think street signs need to follow some sort of Govt. spec.

Nope - not photoshop. I took the photo myself yesterday in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

Looks like someone has way too much time on their hands to come up with 17 MPH.

Perhaps it's a golf cart rich environment?

Or, it has something to do with honoring a retired professor from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA . . ..

The number 17 fascinated him all his life so they say.

Not to be confused with the number 23.

We have a golf course subdivision right next door to us and they have 25 mph signs. We see some driving their golf carts on their streets a lot, which is still illegal, but hey, it is their subdivision, they can do what they want to! ...but then they complain when their own residents speed through there, and some have even hit the golf carts! Can't have it both ways.

(The dumb question would be, who is the most wrong, the speeder or the golf cart driven illegally on the streets? Does it matter? Someone died because someone did something dumb.)

In many areas here in Florida it is legal to drive a golf cart on certain streets. Now, they have to be equipped properly with lights, seat-belts etc., and also have plates and insurance and a licensed driver - just like any other vehicle. I've seen some really sophisticated and luxury carts in my time here.
