Today I did my 15,000 mile service.
All was going well till I got to the rear drive belt pulley.
Due to the particularly shite design of the casing and cover, the clutch has to come off to get the belt out from the rear pulley.
Unfortunately I can't get the clutch nut off.
Its part 23 in this diagram.
I made a holder for the variator which worked fine but when I tried it on the clutch, nothing doing.
I tried a strap wrench round the outside of the clutch body to hold it, but it just slipped.
Any suggestions for a better tool I could use?

Look at the manual they use a fancy looking strap wrench. It's only tightened to 49nm you know what's it like. Things are sometime tighter to remove than they should be. If I was at work I would use an air gun. It says not to hold it with the brake or rear wheel or the transmission could be damaged.
A strap wrench and a tool in the holes similar to the clutch holding tool and an extra pair of hand would help probably.

Here's an idea. If you have a bit of emery/sand paper cut a strip and fold it in half length way. Wrap it around the clutch drum and try the strap wrench. It might just give it a bit of extra bite to stop it slipping. I use a similar trick when flaring steel brake pipes to fit joining pieces except I use valve grinding paste to stop the pipe moving in the tool.

I got a 12v impact driver for this but haven't tried it yet...

Interested in what your going to do for your service, im at the same mileage. Ive got some new rollers ready and was thinking about a new belt, it doesnt need it but im down to an indicated 59mph and think i would get some back with a new belt and makes sense to do it at the same time as the rollers.

The strap wrench I have is probably too small for the bell's diameter, if the emery paper trick doesn't work I'll have to get another tool.
Have seen various chain wrenches and variator holders on ebay which might suit.

@ben, My belt has cracks between the teeth so it will definitely be getting changed.
I've checked the valves, changed the oil and sparkplug.
Just the drive belt and rollers to change and the jobs a goodun.

What weight rollers are you using? I got some 20x15 14.75g from the depths of eBay...hopefully they will work.

Worst part of servicing your own vehicles is finding you dont have the right tool you need, then its the 'do i pay double price at a local shop now or wait for cheap online tool to be delivered'. Sure buy the time im 50 ill have all the toys i need to do anything!

Standard Honda ones, no idea what weight they are.
I'm past 50 and can assure you that you'll never have all the toys you need.

Forgot to mention I changed the airfilter as well.
Part of the service kit I got from ebay.

Have you tried a gatorgrip from yer local homebase?

Isn't that a fancy socket type thingumabob?
The problem isn't getting a hold of the nut, its holding the clutch bell in place.

It's a grippy rubber belt in a plastic handle. Only has two parts. Thread the belt around the housing and pop it back in the handle

As the housing moves the whole thing tightens up.

I us the same tool used for the variator,
never had a problem.....

What variator tool do you have?
The tool I have I made out of scrap plywood and bolts.
When used on the variator it catches on the stand which holds it in place while I give the nut some welly.
When it goes on the clutch there's nothing for it to catch on so I'm struggling to hold it in place while I work the ratchet.
Hmmm, just had an idea, maybe I'll try placing a brick or block of wood under it...

I made one of these. It works fine on the variator but haven't tried it on the clutch.

That looks like it would be OK on the clutch.
One of the key differences between the clutch and the vario is that the clutch doesn't have the bolt holes for the holder.

This is what I bought this afternoon, worked an absolute treat.
The particular version I got was one of these.
First take the variator off.
Next fit the strap wrench round the clutch bell and pop the handle inside the casing to hold it in place.
This leaves both hands free to work on getting the nut undone.
