Advice on mounting side case and trailer hardware to my PCX

Hi. This is my first time posting here. So please feel free to correct anything that I'm doing wrong. Also, you may see these questions posted on another forum.

I am interested in mounting hard side cases to the side of my PCX. As well as attaching a trailer to my PCX.I have searched online and on this forum for any information as to how to accomplish this. So if this is an old topic please forgive me.

I plan on installing Pelican cases (not unlike here: http://img0063.popscreencdn.com/7372353 ... -rack-.jpg)

but I am also open to purchasing manufactured hardware and cases such as these:

http://www.hayabusa.org/forum/attachmen ... g_1526.jpg

I have a design that will allow me to mount the Pelican cases if I can first mount a vertical 1/4" aluminum plate on each side of the bike. But I'm happy to entertain any and all ideas.

While crawling around the internet I came across an idea of towing a Bobyak trailer:

I thought I could make this happen by attaching an aluminum bar from the bolt on the bottom end of the rear shock/spring on each side of the rear wheel. I would then attach the two aluminum bars to the Bobyak trailer. Thoughts?

It might be better to get a van.

Anything's better than a gold wing.
Well apart from harleys and fake harleys.

Givi has some universal side mount frames but you would have to customize them in order for them to fit the PCX.

I think those BOB trailers are cool, but I'm pretty sure those are not legal for a motorized vehicle(I'm sure they would work though).

Just curious, what would you use the trailer for? I can't imagine it holding up at 30mph (50kmh) let alone 50-60mph (80-100kmh).

These panniers were handcrafted to fit a Vespa, but might give you some ideas?

But how would the bottom of the cases be attached to the PCX? The Vespa has rails.

Hi Jamie, welcome!

Pelican cases are good and solid, they're a good option. I'd go with them if you're going for durability over looks. We use them at work all the time and they're near-impossible to destroy. Snoopy mounted side panniers on his PCX, you can check out his thread here: http://hondapcx.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=526.

As for hooking up the trailer, you're going to have a lot of trouble with that. The PCX is a scooter, so the engine weight on the rear swingarm is sprung on the suspension. Adding a trailer to that sprung weight could cause a standing wave and cause your rear end to bounce. The stock suspension doesn't have enough dampening to add that weight to the swingarm. Frame mounting would work much better, but there are no good frame mounting points on the PCX. With a trailer that light, you may be able to figure out how to mount to a topcase mount, but even then, more than ~20lbs will easily crack the aluminum "wing."

There's a great thread on advrider on motorcycle trailering here: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113997. It's long, but you should read it before considering trailering -- there's good points supporting and opposing trailering.

The panniers could easily be attached to the foot rests with a piece of tube, just like Andrew Charnley has done.

Having ridden Friends Gold Wings, Trikes, and Cruisers with Trailers in tow, and spent several thousand miles on various Scooters....."Personally", I don't think a Trailer is a very good idea for a PCX or ANY Scooter. In my opinion, Trailers should be limited to 1000cc+ Machines, and Machines that weigh in the neighborhood of 700+ pounds Themselves.....just not a really good consideration..... ;)

Thoughts?
Thoughts? If you need to tote around a serious amount of luggage, a PCX is probably not the machine to do it with IMO.

And:
"Do not pull a trailer, or attach a sidecar to, your scooter. Your scooter was not designed for these attachments, and their use can seriously impair your scooter's handling."
(page 15 of my copy of PCX Owner's Manual)

Sorry mate, not trying to p!ss on your bonfire, but you did ask for people's thoughts...
