Convenient Helmet Cable Lock

This may or may not appeal to others. I had a problem securing my helmet. I use a Shark helmet which 1) doesn’t fit under the seat, 2) doesn’t have double-d rings so cannot use the helmet strap that Honda supplies, 3) I hate fumbling with a cable lock to secure the helmet to the bike and 4) I rarely have pillions.

I decided to make a convenient helmet cable lock that uses the two bolts securing the seat back rest to the seat so that the helmet can be secured through the chin piece using the seat latch. Helmet sits firmly on the seat and the visor can be in the down position preventing the padding from getting wet if it rains.

This is the end result:

How it was made -
Bought a cheap laptop cable lock over the internet. Cost me all of $2.00

Cut the ends off the cable lock as I only needed the cable. Used an angle grinder with a cutting disk.

Bought some ring connectors from a local electrical store, the type used for SLA batteries. Discarded the plastic sleeves on the connectors. Stripped the plastic cover off the cable and inserted the cable into the connector and crimped. (I had to cut off more cable to enable a snug fit when the helmet was secured).

Remove the back rest from the seat and insert the ring connectors into the bolts on the back rest.

Replace the back rest with the cable protruding from between the seat and the back rest. Replace the two nuts & washers under the seat and tighten.

I intend to attach a top box to the scooter at some stage; this will hold my helmet but the cable lock will stay on the bike in the event I need the extra storage.

Hopefully othere will find this useful. Works for me.

I'm only 168cm (5'6") and the seat "hump" isn't in the way, just feels odd. Have used the helmet cable lock a number of times now and do find it convenient. Quite nice that the helmet sits firmly on the seat.

How secure are those crimps?
Looks like they would pull out really easily.
If you had a cable with loops at both ends like this one you could pass the hump bolts through them.

Hi gn2, I couldn't find crimps large enough so settled for these. I guess the cable lock isn't going to stop someone intent on stealing the helmet, merely a deterent. Certainly will rebuild these when I find larger crimps. Thanks for reminding me that the cable lock isn't totally secure.

Nothing's ever totally secure, but your idea is a cracker for securing a second helmet.

I love this fix. Looks like it's supposed to be there and opens up a whole world of possibilities for the pillion seat area.

Someone would really need to want that helmet to take it off.

What a great idea! My first thought was to do that now....till i remembered my embedded Tork Xpro helmet speakers. :(
