Ouch, That Hurt

Been off the forum for a bit to get repaired. Had surgery for a 18cmx8cm (7"x3") hernia between by sternum and navel. The surgeon had to cut me open as the laparoscopic procedure wasn't an option. Somehow I was naive enough to trick myself into thinking that recovery was going to be as easy and quick as the shoulder surgery I had earlier last year .... NOT! It was quite painful when I woke up but we were able to get it under control quickly, but I sure tire easily. Looks like I won't be riding for at least a couple of weeks. Thought I would be back to work after a week, but it is looking more like next will be part-time at best.

Been there, done that. Don't want to do it again. When i had my second of six back surgeries, they came at it from the front because i had developed a hernia from trying to get up too soon. They had to fix the hernia and my back during the same surgery. It makes recovery so much harder. Here is some advice. Don't try to get up too soon after the surgery or you will be right back on the table. Take your time. I know you want to ride, but two weeks will not be enough time. It might be enough for walking around, but riding your bike is different. It will take the same muscles that have to heal. Take your time, do some gentle stretching exercises, and follow your doctor's orders. He may even have you go to physical therapy. Give it time and don't fight your body. Good luck and i hope you heal fast.

Be sure to not rush it! I did that with my busted leg and had to pay for it with 9 months in a wheelchair. I know it sucks not being able to ride but take a chill pill and wait it out.

Thanks for the advice. It is good to hear from other riders. I guess was storing my six pack in a cooler and the cooler popped open.
I am up and walking, but doing little else of anything except napping. There isn't as much pain now, just mostly discomfort, but I am not going to let the lull me into a false sense of security.

I was wondering what was going on with you kram

What! your shoulder wasn't enough? You had to go and outdo yourself with something bigger like a hernia the size of a child's football? All tucked away and now not able to play?
But seriously, any kind of torso/abdominal surgery is serious. It's major! (Here I go...) "been there done that!" (Sure is crappy to know you're old by bouncing in on a conversation by saying, "hey yeah, me too!" Wow, now ain't that something to holler about? Wahoo! Why the heck did I say it! I must be 90 by now
Off me (boring/yawn face emoticon), back to You. Ya gotta heal All the Way so you can get back in the game. In the hustle and bustle of scoots from point A to B. We know where you live. In fact, it's a challenge to live where you live. Holy Smoker's those roads! You're almost better off staying home healing than putting yourself.... "Out There."
Regardless of all my chatter, I sure hope you heal right, pain free and fast! You're a better man now for tossing out that football! Oh, and no excuses for Not chatting on the forum(s) ...you're taking it easy....remember? Typing is okay

Glad you're still with us! Prayers for your full recovery.
We live in a wonderful point in time where our shared knowledge makes medicine work better for everyone.
It is said that Thailand has excellent medical care at affordable prices.
This fella says a gender change can be had there dirt cheap. Opens all kinds of ideas for tourist advertising doesn't it?

I had my surgery done at Bumrungrad Hospital, which is mentioned in the article. I also had my shoulder surgery done there last April. The article referred to it, and others like it, as a five-star resort. It is no where near that, but it certainly is superior quality, particularly compared to what I have experienced in Canada, the US and England. My latest surgery was the equivalent of about $10,000 (£6,500 €8,800). It would have cost in the $50-$60K range in the US.
Big differences here include a) less administration, b) lower wages, c) vastly less litigation for malpractice which means much less insurance cost for the doctors.

Have you had shoulder surgery in England? If so was the latest a revision? Can you quantify how the NHS surgery was of poorer quality and what exactly was done.
And how much you paid for it?
What country do you pay your taxes in?
