6 month service intervals?

Hello everybody!

I am a proud owner of a PCX 125 which is due its first birthday soon. I has the bike serviced at a Honda dealership at 600 miles which worked out to be around the six month mark. I use the bike for my short commute to work so I am only covering around 1200 miles pa.

The dealership have told my that the bike needs servicing every 6 months regardless of the mileage covered which seems to be contradicting a lot of what I am reading on these forums. The dealership charged me £50 for the first service which seems OK compared to other prices I have read on here.
I have a year left of my warranty and obviously do not want to screw this up. Can anyone help me on this please?

Thanks for reading my first post!

Service every 6 months!!! That's bollocks isn't it? And you don't have to get it serviced at a honda dealer to maintain the warranty, the law was changed to stop people being ripped off.

OK facts are simple, first service at 600 mile, next service is at 2500 or 12 months from date of first registered!! Now in my case I bought my PCX end of Feb this year, BUT it was pre registered on 23rd Dec 2011. So what this means for me, is in spite of just having the 600 mile service done this week, I'm still going to need the 2500 m/12 month service done in Dec to keep warranty intact. This was information given to me by the service dept at the main dealer I bought bike from.
So with all this in mind I approached the local independent guy I use for my Deau, upshot is that he can service the PCX warranty remains intact as long as he uses genuine Honda parts and stamp the book. Now what was interesting is the fact you do NOT have to take your bikes back to a main dealer for that first service, other people can do do it, as long as they use good ole genuine parts and stamp the ole service book.
I know where my bike is going for it's next service now ;) Oh and the service is every 12 months or 2500 miles which ever comes first apart from that 600 mile service.

The dealer is correct, the service schedule is 2500 miles or six months whichever comes first.

Is that a Pcx thing? Because my service book says 12 months not 6

The PCX manual definitely stipulates 6,12,18,24 months.

My Honda manual doesn't

The only item that isn't distance related (other than some two year items) is the oil change. Every 5000 miles or 12 months

Maybe your eSP has a different manual, the one I have indicates six month or 2,500 miles.
And my manual doesn't have a page 4-4 :?

Ah, you were quoting a different manual, I was referring to the UK owners manual and service/warranty booklet as supplied with the scooter in the UK.
The schedule in the UK owners manual is the one which must be adhered to for retention of the warranty.
Remember we're talking about two things here:

1: Maintaining the scooter
2: Maintaining the warranty.

There is a difference, you can do 1 without doing 2.

So you'd have to question why it's necessary if it isn't from a maintenance perspective

Oh I have no question about it at all.
Honda exist to make money and the money comes from their customers and that's us.
Whether we choose to give them that custom or choose to adhere to the conditions of their warranty is up to us.
If you want the warranty, it's six month service intervals.
Once the warranty has expired, it makes no odds whatsoever how frequent services are so long as the scooter remains roadworthy.

Point missed. You've taken a set so I'll leave you to it

To be clear (since gn2 is being as clear as mud)... As long as you use the scooter regularly, no one but those who might deny a warranty claim would care if you did 6 months or 12 months. The engine's not going to care if the oil is 6 months old or 12 months old, oil doesn't really age from time, more from wear.

You should keep in mind that short usage cycles (many 1-mile trips and such) will place more wear on the engine, because more warmup-cooldown cycles will occur, hence them saying you should have oil changed every 12 months instead of waiting 3 years of doing 1-mile round trips. The engine in a country scooter with 10000 miles, used to doing 50+ mile round trips will probably have better compression than a scooter of the same age used exclusively in a city for small trips with 2000 miles.

I don't mind some facetious banter, but let's try to at least answer questions, GN2. :)

Oh I have answered the question, fully and in some detail.
Although I have spotted and am happy to admit to a mistake I have made which is that because the OP used "£" I assumed that he was in the UK without asking.
I should have asked that question first because the warranty terms are different elsewhere.
But then everyone else has had the opportunity to ask where the OP resides so I'm not alone.

All,

Thanks for your responses, looks like I will have to stump up the cash to maintain my warranty. I do think it is Honda's way of making more money from its customers but I may take to a fully registered independent if they work out substantially cheaper.

Thanks
Romaldho

I think that with the profit margin being so small on a scooter the the increased servicing regime benefits the dealer by boosting their turnover/income.
To date I have had five services done on my PCX for a total of £550ish.
Add that to the initial purchase price of £2270 and it's still cheaper than a Vespa would have been over the same timeframe and mileage.
Moving on, now that my warranty is due to expire in the next couple of months I will be doing my own servicing which will cost practically nothing.

Are all honda 125's the same to service? I mean do they all need valve adjustments every (very) few miles? My scooter is out of warranty and don't fancy paying someone to do it when I'm quite handy with engines, only worked on a 50cc 2 stroke before
