I've noticed this bike has been for sale for awhile now and I've seen them cut the price from $3,500 down to the current asking price of $1,995.
I realize this is NOT the Top Gun bike, it is a 1995 GPZ1100 which from what I've read in the following review was a sports-tourer with a detuned (but still powerful) engine that was made for only 3 years starting in 1995:
However, I think it looks close enough to the GPZ900 that with a shiny new black and red paint job, some properly placed stickers, and some TLC it could be turned into an awesome Top Gun tribute that would be great fun to take to bike and car shows. I'm thinking it might make for a fun little project for my son and I to work on and for less than about $5K total I could have all my Top Gun fantasies come true - whaddayathink?
Here's a link to a guy that created a Top Gun clone using an actual GPZ900, he's got lots of behind-the-scenes pics of the actual bikes used in the filming of the movie:

Have you seen Kelly lately? She hit the wall hard. Tom nearly looks the same.

That 95 1100 just isn't a 900R
The 900R is an iconic and revolutionary bike, one of the all time greats.
Think of it in Hollywood terms, the 900R would be Clint Eastwood, the 1100 would be Donnie Wahlberg.

Ouch! I didn't need to see that. It's true being an actor is like watching yourself rot... Who said that?

They even retired the F14s. Some things are just left in the past.

Back to the poster... don't buy that you can do much better. Kawasaki street bikes are the original bucket of bolts during that period imo.

I know, but I rarely see any GPZ900Rs on cycletrader - in fact there's only 1 currently on there for the entire USA and only 5 GPZs of any engine size in the whole USA. I think the '95 1100 has enough of a family resemblance that it might make a decent foundation for a tribute bike. The review from back in the day that I posted above makes it sound like it was an excellent bike - and in some ways even superior to the 900R in things like torque and touring ability.

I piss everyone off by scouring Cycle Trader when I am supposed to be working and showing friends great deals on the bikes they paid too much for. When I bought my Strom I got over $2k off of their "sale" price because the dealer has a standing offer to match any other dealer's price and Halls Motorsports in the south was dumping over six of them as new but leftovers on Cycle Trader from the previous year. I showed it to the dealer and that was it. They had it at $8999 which was a decent starting price and I paid $6920 plus $200 fees OTD. It helped me buy a new commercial zero turn mower.
I love Cycle Trader.

Kelly in Witness is a pinnacle of boyhood dreams. Reasonable movie for the North Americans too. About as gritty as it gets in pastiche land.
