Just back from two weeks of Turkey, where I had two different rides. One 4x4 with one BHP and a little Kymco Agility scooter. The 4x4 came with intelligent traction control on all four, whilst the Kymco was the most fun and cheapest way to get around in the city and even took us 2 up around some technical and very inclined mountain roads! It was great fun and when we reached the end of a road in the middle of nowhere, easy to turn around. Top speed 2 up and uphill was 40 km/h and level out we reached 90 km/h but I wouldn't go faster because the "helmet" they got me would be blown off my head beyond 60 km/h and strangle me on my throat....oh well, the locals don't care about helmets anyway

Did all day rides on it and it got us a fuel consumption of 3.8 to 4 L/100km (75 to 70 mpg imperial), but only after I'm back now I understand how much superior the ride of the PCX is. Turkey is scooter heaven, most of them are Chinese made and look rubbish after a while but I also saw a few PCXs around. The locals put customized all round crash bars on their rides, would love to have that, too.

How is the political climate there? The last I heard from our around the world on a PCX rider, he was about to enter Turkey on the way to Iran.

Wow, that chinese scooter in the 1st pic is probably the most torn-up scooter I've ever seen.

I wouldn't go to Iran or anywhere close to the border with Iran/Syria/Iraq, where I went 80% of people on the streets looked mostly British/German/Russian, also met a few Americans, Belgians and French. I felt very safe on the Turkish riviera, definitely did blend in. Down there you have 20thousand Brits living permanently in the Fethiye area, lots of Russians and 70thousand Germans in Antalya and the region.

Turkey has some very nice and cosmopolitan areas, main street Hisaronu has more light than the high street in Cancun! The more you go east or into the contryside e.g. borders to Syria/Iran/Iraq the more rural and unsafe the region is though, I was warned by a Turkish friend not to go there. The beforementioned border area is very heavily patrolled due to the recent situation with the Syrians and due to the Kurdish question and might be military no go areas (Turkey got the 2nd largest Armed Forces within the NATO right after the US!). Turkey itself is very moderate, with very strong central (democratically elected) government and separation of religion and state.

I've seen others that came close. On that particular one even the dashboard was opaque from the sun and I couldn't see the speedo....

I hope he has bailed out on his idea to ride through Iran but he seemed determined despite the warnings. Better to head out from Turkey or head back to Greece and take a ship to India and start again there.
