Split tire

I've had my PCX150 for 2 months and 3,300 miles later I discover my rear tire has a large split. There's nothing I can remember that would have cause this. I need opinions, defective tire or no? Keep in mind I live in south west Florida, road conditions r much nicer than in areas that have to deal with frost, so there's zero chance it's because of road conditions.

I tried to edit my original post and add a pic but wasn't able to. I shouldn't say there's zero chance. There are reflectors in/on the road here that I've run over a couple times, would that cause this to split a tire?

good opportunity to switch to a better tire like a michelin city grip or pirelli diablo!

Err no, it is highly likely to be caused by something you have ridden over, or even vandalism.
As said previously just change it for a Michelin or Pirelli.

for the sake of the cost, change it, not worth the risk of something happening if the tyre gives up

+1 to this comment, it really isn't worth the risk.

I don't think he is considering reusing it but rather asking how it happened?

Fair comment. It can be almost impossble to say what caused the split, unless you are aware of hitting something. A tyre centre might be able to say whether the tyre is defective or whether something else caused it.

Once I discovered it, I never considered not replacing it. Not that this is related, but I thought I had read somewhere that the release of the PCX150 was delayed originally because of a tire issue, anyone else heard this? I ordered a City Grip that should be in Tuesday.

The first 7,500 PCX150s delivered in Thailand had a tire recall issued due to a manufacturing defect discovered shortly after the PCX150 release in March 2012. The issue was with how the layers of the tires were manufactured, cured or vulcanized (not sure of the correct term). The possible result was separation of layers and the potential for vibration or tire failure at higher speeds. I believe the problem was identified and resolved prior to exporting any PCX150s out of Thailand. My original tires were replaced with about 2700K and showed not problems.

You probably ran over something. I've seen tires split after 10+ years from dry rot, but never as quickly as yours have split.

Is the split across the treads or parallel?

Post up a picture, just add it in a new post...

I am reminded of a joke involving masking tape and hamsters.

I wish. It wouldn't even have anyone's eye out.

you probably just need to upload it to a photo hosting site like photobucket.com first. then paste the IMG code into the message box.
