Fog + dark = riding!

Post by fish »

Rain is due at sun-up.
But, one "possible" day, after 5 weeks of impossible weather, so I geared up and jumped on the the 7yr old LIKE200iLX at 0'Dark:30 ....and headed off into what might have been Pea Soup - except it was too dark to see it.

My wife standing at the door, shaking her head sadly, as her nut-job husband disappeared quickly into the heaviest fog and dark.

The Liberty has that wonderful 55W fog boring headlight - but the LIKE has the lighted top case, the winking rear fog&rain light and trusted wet weather Michelins!

My winter riding gear is also water proof - and a fog like this will soak you in short order. Also is great fun on & in the face shield. (some day I'll install the PinLock !) 1 mile down the road I gave up and opened the face shield for the remainder.

Cruised at about 26MPH in the black fog....coming home in the grey fog averaged @ 31mph. I know my route to my coffee village - so this was safe.

Just beat the heavy rain coming home.

Knocked on my daughter's bedroom door, "Your Hells Angel father is home!"
"Dad, you ride a scooter - quit exaggerating!"

Great story and pics!

You describe it quite well . . ..

I've done stuff like that but not so much recently. Fog is the pits. If you're not careful you can get spaciously disoriented. o_O

I think the last crazy "midnightish" ride I did was about 7 or 8 years ago. Went from my town all the way up to West Yarmouth, Cape Cod. Was able to top off the gas tank twice . . . found two stations that were open late on the way. My Suzuki Bandit gets about 45 MPG on the Highway so I get nervous at 150 miles if I don't see any gas stations open. That night I stopped once at the gas station by the rotary on the Cape side of the Bourne Bridge and again up off Rt. 28 in West Yarmouth. I remember smelling what seemed like rain in the air and then noticed dampness emerging on the road ahead. Somehow I just missed the showers. . .they moved out ahead of my arrival. 8)

Oh. . . and I forgot to mention after the last gas fill up in West Yarmouth I turned around and rode home. That was the crazy part!

This video shows the first gas station I found on the way that was open at the rotary on Rt. 28 just off the Bourne Bridge. Look off to the right and you'll see a Gulf station and Rt. 28 continues on from there.
