When riding I can feel the rear brake sticking after I've released the brake lever.

A slight screeching sound can be heard and also there's a slight drag from the brake.

Doesn't happen all the time but it's quite worrisome.

Any opinion on which part should I check first? Brake cable? return spring? Shoe?

Note: changed my shoe 4 months ago. brake feels spongy too

Most likely it's the brake cam sticking (the shaft that protrudes from the drum which connects to the brake arm).

Dismantle and grease it up.

Lever, cam or cable sticking. (Most likely the cam)

Brake spring or shoes dislodged or broken (Most likely the spring)

Shoes worn.


You have just replaced the shoes, it’s likely to be linked to this. Were they OEM?

Good advice so far . . ..

Other than a disfunctional brake cam, disengaged return spring, or loose shoes, check the cable routing also and make sure there is no fraying at the lever especially (although I doubt that's the problem).

Also there's a RR Brake Cable Clamp down near where the cap is for the oil pump strainer screen on the lower left side of the crankcase cover. If you had the Honda Shop do the brakes last time maybe check to see if they tightened that clamp in case they loosened it for some reason. If you had the oil changed also then and they did the job thoroughly they may have needed to remove that clamp to get the strainer cap off more easily. Just guessing.

Let us know when you find out what is causing the problem. For safety sake I'd not ride it until the problem has been corrected.

yeah, that's the plan if the DIY tinkering, cleaning and lubing won't work.

Update:

Went to Honda and the mechanic just changed my brake shoes. Old shoes only half worn, the guy threw it away anyway.

After changing, the brake feel the same. I told the guy it could be the cam, he just sprayed some oil into it, no disassembling happened.

After some tinkering, including stretching the return spring a little, the guy gave up and told me to get an aftermarket brake arm and spring for stronger spring. like the pic below.
Honda Thailand is very incompetent.

I'll be getting that aftermarket spring anyway to see if it'll solve my problem.

Had to post this quick but it may help. . .. Not directly related to scooters but drum brakes in general.

Thank you. I just need to find time to learn and do some DIY stuff since finding a really reliable shop is a problem here.

Problem solved.

Lube the cam and just added another spring on the brake arm and the overall feel of the brake lever improved a great deal. It gave the brake a consistent feel compared to the on and off sticking feel of the stock spring.


Those who want a more consistent feel on the rear brake can try this too.
