PCX125 Centre Stand

Hi guys, just bought a 2011 PCX to commute on. I wasnt aware of the cenre stand issue and having now checked, the stand lugs are broken. I bought privately so no comeback there.

The lugs are still complete with no missing pieces at the moment. Has anyone had any success with TIG welding the lugs without stripping down the entire bike. I am just going through the bike in detail at the moment to see what else needs doing so I will be removing all plastics. Guess I could strip the frame completely if absolutely necessary to get a repair done, but its a lot of work if its not really necessary.

If the lug snaps completely, does the bike fall over or is it still supported?

Sorry for all the questions, but I would like to get the bike into top condition.

Hello Robbie.
It might be an idea not to use the centre stand and use the side stand at the moment.
You cannot guarantee the integrity of the lugs.

There are treads on the forum about this. Some people have just removed the centre stand.

Where are you located? It helps us help you.

There are engineering company's that will weld it up but how dismantled it has to be would depend on the repairer.

I had noticed that thread on searching, but nobody has mentioned if they managed to fix the problem (without replacing the crankcase anyway). I may take the engine out if I absolutely have to, but it would be interesting to know if anyone has successfully repaired the breakage without further problem.

I support what Alibally suggests, only I might just remove the centre stand altogether so that you nor anyone else uses it by mistake. Any failure has the potential to be catastrophic, so anything you can do to avoid it would likely be wise.

Obviously you would need to speak to them regarding the amount of stripping that would need done.
They might want the engine out and the stand attached so the lugs are repaired in the correct place.

I am a bit OCD and want everything to be as it should be. I will take off the centre stand until I can get a proper fix. It really does make removing wheels, checking oil, filling up etc. so much easier.

That link looks real promising thanks - they are pretty close to me and appear to specialise in this sort of thing.

So I got the crankcases welded up at the stand mounts. One side had completely broken and whilst the other side was fine, I got both sides strengthened while the engine was out. Had an aluminium strip bent to follow the outside of the mounting and had it all welded up. Hopefully this will last but I will still only be using the centre stand for maintenance and fuel fill ups.

Got the engine back in now and I have done the valve clearances while it was out.

It was the guys at the link you provided Alibally. Thanks for that, although they normally make bespoke motorbike frames.

I should have taken the injector out though, as the fuel inlet has snapped off some time during the welding. Hopefully ebay to the rescue.

One of the lugs on mine has snapped completely on the side away from my exhaust. Probably more hassle than it's worth to get it fixed? I guess any engineering company will have to fabricate a new lug and then grind away what's there before welding the fix back into place.

Seems like a lot of work when you can pick up an entire engine for less than £300 on eBay!

Chances are the £300 replacement engine will come with ready broken mounts or they will fail sooner or later so will need repair anyway.
The stand mounts are stronger on the eSP engine, but I don't think the eSP engine fits.

Just know that Honda is aware of the center stand problem on the older PCX. They seem to have fixed the problem on the newer ones. If you could look at the stand on the new eSP ones, you might figure out what they did to improve it. I am sure that you would be upset if it broke again, so if there is a way to make it better, why not find out now, before it breaks again.

Hah! Not so fast!

I've actually had a change of heart with the little PCX. It's too small for me and breathless above 45mph BUT I'm going to fix it up and actually see how it performs without a ruined clutch plate bearing, a battery that holds charge and decent damping up front:

Spoke with some guys locally, once I get these other jobs sorted I'm going to have them weld a new lug into place and rebuild the center stand.

Even if I do sell it - not saying I will - I'd rather sell a working bike than a piece of junk

Thought i would update this.

Well I have been using the PCX for the last year commuting. Been used most days come rain or shine. I do an annual thorough check over and I took the stand out to grease the pivot.

I can confirm the repair is holding fine, but then it's probably a lot stronger than before. I have used only the centre stand as I wanted to make sure it was ok (it's also much more convenient using the centre stand to fill up etc.). Happy with the fix.
