Leg Shields

Post by willajabir »

I tried plexiglass, which worked well until it cracked. It also got in the way of the brake.
I pressed the bottom edge of the plastic between the floorboard and tupperware.
I folded the top section in about 1/2 inch and used industrial velcro to hold it in place because the top section it not straight and has a vent.
So, I used a plastic cutting mat. I have several different color of mats, but used the opaque.
I also have some red ones, but thought that might be to much red. I made some like this for my Burgman 650, then painted them black.
Anywho, here are the results:

I'll have to look at the PCX, I've made these for the elite 250, Burgman 650, and now my Forza. Should be able to fashion something.
I just tested them on the same route I did my previous test ... 348 miles over to the casino...lost $20, but the feet and shins didn't suffer from the cold wind!!!!

Hey Mel, maybe I can meet you over in China Town for some noodles one day?

Alternatively, just put your feet flat.

China Town:
http://www.atlantachinatown.com/
Nice restaurant on one side and an Asian food court in the back.
Asian/Latino community very thick there.

edit: You You, I can make 17 sets of the leg guards for the price of one pair of those hunter socks.

Ok, I now understand why it won't work on the PCX. It would have to be very different and probably in 2 parts.
The turn signal mount would have to be worked around also.
I haven't ridden a PCX, but it looks (in the pics) to me like it has better leg protection than the Forza already.

Cheers! Tis a clever personal mod! Easy to install and affordable. Will you be leaving them opaque? How about something different? I'm trying to envision a painted stripe pattern like a "V" pattern. Not busy looking, not a lot of V stripes.
Or....hey! Maybe just some carbon fiber covering them? 8)

Thanks,
I have used colored mats and painted one set black that I put on a Burgman 650. I was planning on Black to match the boards or red to match the tupperware. They sell red mats, but not black ones. I guess cooks don't like black cutting mats. After I put them on, I kinda liked the look (opaque). I'm still tinkering with some though. I took a cold ride tonight for 34 miles just to buy a newspaper. It was 18 at my home and 21 in Birmingham. They kept the wind from going up the pants enough I didn't use the pants to my snow suit. I do think if I was in your state, skids on the bike and electric clothing would be required or important parts might start to fall off.
Another idea (not actually tried anything yet) is to double them so they are like sheet protectors. Then just slide any picture or design between them and change them just by printing a new design on the printer.
Sometimes a design sounds good, looks good in the house and looks terrible on the bike.

The PCX doesn't give much leg wind protection. When my wife and I go for a ride that is her first complaint. The wind seems to funnel to her legs instead of away from her legs or even blocking the wind. I have tried to figure out something. It looks like it would have to be custom made, and it would have to either be 2 pieces or 1 long piece that would cover the entire side. If I figure it out I will post something. Otherwise, this will be an ongoing problem for her when she rides. We have thought about the type of setup that Dave does but she felt that if she fell she couldn't get out of it quickly.

The double panel (sandwich) idea being able to alternate photo/design etc. is cool but....Mother Nature always has a way of sneaking in :| Hmm, unless....??? You permanently seal all edges But the entry area. Maybe insert an easy on/off rubber strip or similar for quick access? Just talking thoughts out loud
Hel-lo! Are we forgetting Stickers? The easy on/off self stick vinyl peelies, or.....other types. It just might give you a better idea of how "Anything" might Look on your custom leg shields.
I like what you're doing willajabir ;) I'm in for the outcome. Are ya having fun? "That definitely Counts!" :P

WN, you are on my bad list now  You are encouraging me!!!!!!! Or does that make you my co-conspirator?
Oh yes!!! It's all fun for me. I did use stickers before. I bought a bunch of butterfly stickers of different sizes/colors for my nieces wedding. I left them on for a 4 day trip and got lots of comments...you can imagine what some said...hahahaha, but it was still fun. Thanks for the idea...I could use edge trim or hmmm I can try some of those notebook edgy things that hold several sheets of paper inside a plastic binder...can't think what they are called.
Flexable and just slides on. Also thought about drawing designs with magic markers, then when time to change, use googone to take it off for the next design. My biggest problem with that is, I'm a romantic, and I like to put things like my wife's name (She is Chinese, so Chinese characters), but she gets upset with me when I personalize it to her. Maybe a bright red dragon head facing the front of the bike????
They are functional though, which was my main goal.

Too much time? Nonsense! It's a work in progress!! ;) By Willa... there ya go! That was a very quick fix on an idea (or two ) The first sticky looks better (to me too) because the head appears to have a body behind it. See it? Now...if you move the sticky forward and tilt the head (aim nose up) a bit it will look as if it's running along with you ("with a body" panel behind it). Gotta name this fella :)
Now, can ya get some smoke comin' out those nostrils? Or maybe in a Wave type pattern you could smoke color the shields? (Maybe in light & darker shades?)
Here's the real questions....How do You like them? What would You change? Any Background color ideas? Or,.....you got sumptin else to show us?
(Emoticon placed here: with Head shaking up and down.... yes, yes, yes!)
BTW I know I'm Bad :D ....Michael told me that a Long time ago (rip)
Okay....I'm Still Here

Cousin just told me that pic #2 (bottom) looked like a sick chicken...

WN-Bad in a good way or Bad in in BAD way? I can see already, you are an instigator....

Nice weather in Alabama today (sorry for you guys up north) so I gotta ride some....

Tried a printed on paper pic behind the shields...opaque doesn't let it show enough. So, I'll have to have the front piece clear OR use vinyl sticker.
I'm favoring vinyl stickers at the moment.
