The "RIDE!"

Post by wangsuda »

Today was a great day for a ride. I still really haven't broken in my PCX. It's almost two months old and still has less than 400 km on it. So the gf and I kitted out and drove 40 km to Bangkok (I now live out in the sticks) to do a bit of shopping. That's the boring part. The good part is coming.

Just as you leave Sapan Mai, there is this stretch of road. It is straight for about five km. There are no signal lights. Nothing but smooth cement all the way to Phatum Thani Provence (where I live). So I'm at this red light looking at this expanse of drag strip and I decide to see just how fast the PCX will go. I give the gf a warning, pointing down the road and give a couple of air throttle guns to let her know. Unbeknownst to me, a shiny red PCX pulls up beside me. The driver sees my signal and thinks we're going to have a race. He nods. He taps his gf to let her know and now we are both waiting for the light to turn green.

The light turns green. He gets me at the start. I gun the hell out of the PCX and catch up. My gf and I crouch low. Both PCXs are in the same lane. We are pretty much neck and neck. The speedo is climbing like a (insert favorite word here) . . . 80 . . . 90 . . . 100 . . . 110 . . . 120! Oh hell yes! 120 km/h (74.5 mph)! And I still had throttle to go! And we are still neck and neck! And then . . . it happened! The shiny red PCX just pulled away like nothing, leaving me in the dust. That SOB still had plenty left over! I tried to catch up, got my PCX up to about 125 or so (maybe a little less), and then I let it slow down. Man, what a RUSH! My totally stock PCX gave me such a great speed run!

But now here's the sad part: what ever that guy did to his red PCX, I want to do too! I don't want to get left in the dust again!

Still, though, it was one great ride! Made me love my PCX even more!

There are a lot of things that can be done to improve a pcx and over in Thailand they seem to be at the forefront of mods for it. I think that is because the pcx is manufactured there, so it is very popular there. The other guy might have had a big bore kit installed. Is yours a 125cc or a 150cc? If both of the bikes are 150cc then I don't think you can bump them above 170cc yet, though Yuminashi is working on the 196cc kit now. In either case, it would be hard to tell what he did with hi without speaking to him.

It did 120 and a bit above briefly (like just a few seconds).

That's quite an impressive speed considering you were both riding two-up. Mine generally struggles to go 75 mph downhill with only my fat ass on the seat :D .

Are 150s not 'limited' then?

125s certainly are.

The 150 is limited. Perhaps I just had a freak occurrence. Maybe there was a slight downhill grade. Maybe there was a bit of tail wind. I have no idea. All I do know is that for a brief while, it really kicked ass. And then got its ass kicked.

Maybe your speedo is over-reading? Reading back again, I doubt a stock 150 could do that even running downhill. The limiter should kick in, and if it doesn't you'd risk floating valves and possible engine damage at higher rpms.

It could be. I have never tested it out with GPS or anything.

As far as i know Dave has one of the fastest pcx scooters around, so he would be the one who could tell you what it could do even with a big bore kit. Many of us are waiting for the big bore kit for the 150 to be perfected. Meanwhile, Dave put the kit on his 125 and now it is a 170cc. Still, it does have limits. My 150 hits its limit at around 67mph. I don't know what his bike's limit is but I would be surprised if it hit 80mph.
