to read or not to read...

Lately I've noticed new members with large blocks of text are changing my forum habits which is good for folks who like to read however I'm not one of those people. Are moderators getting a workout too

Hey, I apologize for my lack of patience for long posts or any with more than just a few lines of text. But this is good, if the poster knows their audience is reading. No disrespect but unless there's a quick explanation for a problem with the bike or new discovery concerning the operation, accessory or peril, myself like some others I suspect... might be skipping the long posts completely.

Mel was always the long write of the week in here, but he has an excuse these new guys are more like columnists. To each their own for sure, just want to let you know shorter can get you more readers in a motorbike forum. Love ya! Party on... just don't forget to ride the bike a little bit now and then.

OTOH - if someone gets pensive and chooses to explore a thought or explain a position, that's fine too. You can always just not read it if it appears long. You can guarantee, however, that it took someone longer to write it than it will take you to read it.

I'm on a regular computer, so that might make a difference. Reading a long post on a telephone postage stamp would probably be annoying - at least it would be to me - but not as annoying as trying to write a long post without a keyboard.

Point made. Yes time consuming, but this moderator likes to read. I do my best to get through most postings. I learn from "those long posts" too. I find and pull out the good stuff! Quick 2-4 liners are not always enough. Some of us are/still students. Not all are teachers or mechanic's. Patience.

I know you're just bringing your own awareness to the board and I expect some will agree, some won't, some care, some don't. There's no rule on length of posts. Just what's in them(content). No need to go there. Anyone can Read the rules.
I do Write long. I'm Guilty, Guilty, Guilty! Will I change? UH Yeah....NO!

No ones feelings get hurt when/if you pass their post. That's the beauty of forums, we have no idea! We can be here there and everywhere in silence.

Pretty much sums up how I feel too.

I'm a believer of the old saw "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day - but teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". Sometimes those "fishing lessons" require a lot of words - but on the flip-side, lesson attendance is entirely optional (and there's no test afterwards)

We each have our areas of expertise (both PCX and non-PCX related) and I for one very much enjoy expanding my knowledge through reading the postings of others.

Maybe when we write long posts, (I am an offender sometimes) we should write a very brief summary of what will be in the long post.

I like to read all active posts, but reading too many long winded posts becomes a chore.

I'm 75 and haven't got enough time left to waste it :-)

If a subject from skimming seems interesting I will go back and read more - if it's a topic I'm not really bothered about or too long / off-topic, move on, simple. You don't have to read everything posted. No need for a summary - how hard is it to see how long a post is - enough dumbing down in society as it is.

I click on "View unread posts" then decide whether to look at the thread based on the title and author, so I don't actually look at too many threads these days.
Time was when I read absolutely everything, but the forum seems a lot bigger and busier now.

Scary to think its coming on six years since Dave (Maddiedog) invited me to join his forum, where has the time gone?
Hope he and his family are all doing well.

i try to be succinct as possible, but my penchant for prose occasionally gets the better of me. I also *attempt* to use my posts for multiple questions, to keep the clutter down (unless that are totally dissimilar).

In other forums, I do also include a TL;DR version in case I am a windbag.

A general rule I learned for writing as well as public speaking (which I do regularly) is that typically, less is more.
